Nice hardware ruined by broken firmware and software

Overall, great build quality and excellent sensor, feels very nice in the hand, nice smooth tracking… It’s hard to justify 5/5, but this mouse comes close save for a few minor gripes. The manual directs you to a (broken) beta version of the RGB customization software, but this can be resolved by simply downloading the stable version from HyperX’s website.Sensor: 5/5Looks: 5/5Ergo/Feel: 4/5Software: 3/5 (explanation below)First, the pros:-3389 sensor is very precise, no jitter, no tracking problems. Basically just a higher res version of the 3360 sensor, which is also great. Pixart’s sensors are the best on the market, so any mouse with one of these is going to have quality tracking.-All the buttons feel nice and crisp without being too stiff. In about a week of using the mouse, I haven’t felt that I would ever accidentally misclick, nor do I ever feel like I need to press harder than I should have to.-Foot pads are nice and big, which means tracking is smooth and stable. I previously used a Zowie EC1B (another quality mouse) and one of my only issues with it was that the mouse feet were rather small and didn’t have the smoothest tracking movement as a result.-The overall shape gives the ergonomic feel a “jack of all trades” quality. Clawgrippers will be able to work with the slope to the rear for resting your wrist on. However, towards the middle there’s a nice palm swell which will work if you prefer palmgrip. Some mice are explicitly palmgrip, some are explicitly clawgrip, this one feels like it can work for both.-Matte finish has a bit of a grit to it, which I like because it makes the mouse grippy without any cheapo rubber pads like steel series-RGB customization has more possibilities than most mice, with lots of RGB zones and pattern combinations available. Profiles saved to the firmware can be swapped on the fly without any software.-If you’re looking for a good quality mouse but are turned off by over the top “gamer” swag with lots of angular shapes and accents that make the mouse look like a spaceship, this is the mouse for you. Aside from the light ring and backlit logo, this mouse has a very conventional shape without any further “gamer” bells and whistles. Just a straightforward mouse with a splash of color. Now, the cons:-BE CAREFUL of which software you get – The website will nudge you in the direction of getting the beta software from the Windows Store. As of now, this software is totally broken and does not live up to the expectations you would probably have for a quality mouse. Instead of the beta, you want the older stable release of the software, which does NOT come from the Windows Store and is just a typical exe installer from HyperX’s website. The official, stable release does not list the Surge as a supported model, but it IS in fact fully supported. The stable release is the software you want, because it functions exactly the way any RGB customization software should: It lets you save profiles to the firmware, can be minimized to the system tray, etc. Bearing all of that in mind, watch out for the Windows Store beta release of the software – This is the release you want to avoid like the plague. It does not save color profiles to the firmware correctly, and cannot be minimized to the tray, meaning that you will have to keep the window open in the taskbar to make your color profiles work. If you try to save profiles to the firmware and then switch them without the beta software running, the mouse will lock up and will require a hard reset.

    odd shape

I normally use razer mouse I have both deathadder and mamba te just the te sensor is really lacking. From different reviews I took rocket jump ninja advice and brought this hyperx surge over other’s he had on his site. Now here the reason I have 4 stars sure they fixed the buttons colliding but the piece I got on the right side is uneven toward the front so my ring finger grinds against what is the plastic side almost like a knife very annoying and this only occurs on the right side left was fine. I’m still keeping it since it a really good mouse with sensor and weight just have to push the side in making the plastic go in an obvious manufacturing flaw. I also got to say for those who want to get this mouse you might not like it since it tapers toward the back leaving you nowhere to place your palm, and take a bit of time you do get used to it just a fyi.update: It has been about almost a month now since purchase the sensor and function is great probably one of the best mouse I’ve used. It’s lighter than the razor just by a few grams moves nice and accurate. I found during this month It took about 3 days to a full week to get used to just had to adjust my grip since there was no place to rest for my pinky since its tapered profile at the back end. I had to do two adjust must one was change my ring and pinky to kind of move in toward the mouse like a claw grip second is tilting the mouse rear outward a little so that new grip sits comfortably on the mouse. I also found kind of a con on my razer the scroll wheel can tilt right or left to scroll side ways. On the hyperx for a total lose of a good reason they decieded to give you a tilting mouse but only to the right why? completely baffles me either have the function or don’t why go half way?

Good for big hands, works while wearing a wrist brace

I’ve tried several mice for my big hands (like, able to hold a basketball upside-down big), and this might slightly edge out the largest Mionix. It’s not enormous, but is very comfortable in the hand, and by not being too long it does well with a wrist brace when needed.I’ve put it through its paces over the last months for Lightroom photo editing and PC gaming, and so far, so good. Build quality feels great.

    This is the one

Funny how Amazon sends me e-mails to do a product review for many things I purchase yet I don’t bother, but this product for some reason they didn’t and I had to seek out and do one voluntarily without being prompted? I just wanted to say this mouse is nice. It’s light weight, smooth, the buttons don’t overlap, it’s simple, it gets the job done, and it’s a nice simple premium mouse. If you want to customize it, don’t download the HyperX Windows Store app, download the older driver instead (the one on the right hand side that doesn’t mention Surge). Configure your profile there, then drag it down into one of the three memory slots. That will save you from doing a 1 star review after I almost did. After that, the mouse is fully customization with a persistent on-board memory even with different computers and if you uninstall the software. What more could you ask? It does the trick, just do the software portion as I explained and you’ll be happy. I love the mouse honestly it’s just a shame HyperX has a crappy QA and marketing department it seems, not to mention bad programmers with the UWP app. Be smart about it and the product is good. That’s all I have to say.UPDATE: They removed the legacy software from their store. Their UWP Windows Store version is complete garbage. Changing 5 star review to 1 star. Dear HyperX: Stop this UWP madness, develop on a proper framework which doesn’t force users to use the garbage Windows 10 store.

    Gorgeous

The mouse itself is gorgeous and I love all the different colors. I just went into my game and could actually hit targets. The mouse I had before was a cheap $9 mouse also from Amazon. Obviously, that mouse I couldn’t customize. With this new mouse I adjusted my mouse settings on my computer, changed dpi from 800-1000 and I feel like an actual gamer now. All that’s left is upgrading my current system. My little laptop got me through college and is suitable for working from home, however it’s not a gaming system. The video card is dedicated but super old. This is as good as I’m going to get until I get a better system, but I’m thrilled with this mouse.

Great gaming mouse ! Awesome RGB lighting.

It’s basically a really good and precise mouse , very customizable with awesome RGB lighting. The software is so so but it works. It’s still in beta stage, has some bugs, one of the is that you cannot minimize the app to the system tray. It’s stays in the task bar of windows no matter what.About the mouse I’ll say it works great by itself. It feels comfortable in the hand, it’s a little heavy compared to the Corsair harpoon rgb I had but nothing to worry about, it’s comfortable. I have medium to large hands and this mouse works best for both CLAW and PALM grip, I’d say you can use fingertip style if you have very large hands. But it’s mostly palm/claw grip mouse. I use both depending in what I’m doing. This mouse has a Pixart 3389 optical sensor which is a high end one, a slightly upgraded 3360. So you’ll get acuérdate aiming in fps games. Build quality seems ok, it kinda feels cheap but not by much, it just has a very plastic feel to it. It won’t ruin your experience. The price-benefit ratio is great and I’m loving it so far. I recommend it.Pros:-Very precise and responsive tracking-Awesome rgb and customization-Pixart 3389-1000hz polling rate (1ms)-Looks great-InexpensiveCons:-Build quality is just OK.-Software needs improvement, still in beta stage

    Amazing mouse, bad software.

Pretty great mouse, fits nicely in my palm, buttons feel good and responsive. Only reason I’m giving my this 4 outta 5 is just a personal prefence of mine, the only con I found for this mouse is the rgb lighting; whole it’s pretty and vibrant and the colors look super nice.. the speed the lights move are still too fast even on the slowest setting. and hyperXs bad software doesn’t allow rbg color sync across it’s other hyperX devices, like keyboard and mouse pad, none of the rgb sync to match up, they kinda just run their own pattern without syncing. So my only con why it’s 4 outta 5 is the bad software and rgb lights cycling too fast-Update: It’s been a few weeks since I bought this mouse.. and I think I need to lower my review.. so I also bought a hyperX rbg mousepad, hard surface one. So.. after awhile the mouse skates/feet whatever you call them started to feel extremely scratchy when I start to glide it across my mousepad.. it’s seriously a problem and I feel it every time I move my mouse. Good mouse, but poor software, and poor mouse skate/feet that get extremely scratchy after a short time of usage.

    Could be (a lot) better

I like the brand but this isn’t what I would call good. There are plenty of better and cheaper options for mice out there. I’d rather continue using my 3+ year-old $16 mouse that now has a broken right-click than this thing. And that’s the reason I’m looking for a new mouse in the first place. In General:Pros-The mouse build quality. The RGB lighting. (when the software is open)Cons-The Software. (Check the bottom of review)*It is far to small for my bigger hands.Weighs a lot for its size. Some movements just wouldn’t register (I’d move and for a brief second it wouldn’t go anywhere so I found myself ending up just short of where I wanted to go and where I should have been)*The Software:The software is buggy and poorly designed. There is no obvious easy way to save the customization setting. It has minuscule settings for the program itself, such as open on startup and open minimized. That’s minimized to the taskbar, by the way, there is no option to hide it like every other product software. You will want to keep it open, and minimized if you don’t want your mouse colors to start violently rotating through your set colors. Lastly, the terrible software has to be downloaded off the windows store; which I didn’t think anyone actually used.

    Very good mouse

The HyperX Pulsefire Surge is an excellent mouse. It’s performance in gaming and regular computer work are first rate. It is attractive and it’s lighting options are about the best I’ve seen. It competes well with other top tier mice but is a little expensive in comparison. The only problems I have with the Pulsefire Surge are that it is a little small for my hands, the DPI button is hard for me to press without engaging the right mouse button and the software is not as easy to use or comprehensive as I would have liked.Apart from the few concerns above the mouse is a keeper. However, I would recommend that you look around , especially if you have larger size hands. There are many fine gaming mice out there these days by Razer, Logitech, Fnatic Gear, Steelseries, Roccat and others.

    Amazing hardware, concerning software.

**full video w/ voice explanation is in the videos section of this product!I’d like to preface this by noting that the actual packaging of the box seemed like it took a beating, as evidenced by the black dust (?) marks on it. I had suspicions that it was a returned item but I didn’t notice any issues when I first used it.*I’ve only used it for two days. I was going to wait until I’ve used it for a reasonable amount of time but I’m just a super paranoid person so I have to address this issue in a review.PRO:-fast, tactile clicks-smooth matte coating (prone to attracting sweat but it’s really comfy so whatever haha)-somewhat textured sides, I don’t really give much care to the sides but it’s noticeable-bright rgb lights with good rgb range-braided cablesCONS:***I paid for a NEW product, not refurbished/used.-abused box, seemingly returned item.-attracts sweat, noticeable stain that goes away after a while but makes me wonder if it’ll cause an issue after long term use.-fraying on the cables, though I don’t really care if it doesn’t effect the performance of the mouse. Though obviously, I have my suspicions.-their software, Hyperx Ngenuity, literally makes me want to break down in tears. Where do I even start? I was so excited for this product and it really did perform the way I expected it to but the fact that some rgb effects don’t work really takes away from the excitement. Specifically, the wave and trigger effect does not work. I’ve tried everything; restarting my computer, uninstalling the software, shutting down other rgb programs etc. Nothing worked.I’m not one to care for rgb lighting but the fact that there are defects in the mouse concerns me as this is a telltale sign of malfunctioning in the future.I’d like to also note that I’m a very paranoid person. I’d like to give the benefit of the doubt to hyperx and keep on using this product without concerns but I would rather not take any chances. I’m going to use it for a couple of more days, since it’s New Years & I’m not tryna return it on New Years (I’m not a monster haha), and I’ll see if there’re any other errors that I can catch. I will be returning this product and buying a new one because I love this mouse 🙂 Hopefully I’ll get a better one next time.**rating it as a two star due to the inconvenience + unreliable softwarethe hardware/performance = 4.5/5 :))
