Meh. It’s a nice feeling solid keyboard with too many complications.

When looking for a replacement keyboard, my list of must haves were pretty simple:-It must be backlit.-It must use mechanical switches.-It must be a wired USB keyboard to work with my IOGear GCS1104 kvmp switch.-It must have the the 104 key layout. This keyboard seemed to fill the bill. It was made by Logitech– a name I know and trust. And it had decent reviews. I didn’t really care about gaming, I just wanted a nice solid feeling keyboard.I was replacing an old HP keyboard that still worked, but was getting sticky in a few places. My old run-of-the-mill HP keyboard worked perfectly with my IOGear kvmp switch. I was using it with a Mac, two PCs and a Linux machine– no issues whatsoever. As I have waded into gaming components for PC builds, I have discovered that they have lots of configurability, and this keyboard is no exception– and this is where the problems start. I plugged this keyboard into the kvmp switch and the PCs refused to boot, as the keyboard wasn’t recognized. Plugging the keyboard directly into the PC worked fine… very puzzling… The kvmp switch has a setting to simply pass the keyboard through directly to the computer. It didn’t work. The Mac and Sun keyboard emulations did work… but I didn’t want those because they remap certain keys. I wound up using the “Reset keyboard and mouse under some special OS’ that do not support USB 2.0” which makes no sense. And of course, none of the gaming stuff works when going through the kvmp.As one might expect, Logitech only guarantees the operation of the keyboard when connected directly to the computer, so I guess I’m out of luck for now.The keyboard does have a nice feel and it is really solid. The software that comes from the Logitech website (not in the box) does seem to have LOTs of features that I won’t use. The key legends are clear when backlit, although I’m not real fond of the legends for special characters, especially the @ and $.I may still be in the market for a different backlit keyboard, if I can find one that doesn’t require a bunch of complicated software to set it up– or maybe I’ll just get another HP keyboard and decide to be happy.

    Fantastic backlit keyboard

I got the Orion G610 to replace a very old Steelseries 6Gv2. So far so good. I’ve had the G610 about 2 weeks, and I love it.There were 2 reasons I wanted a new keyboard:–I never liked the weird backslash/pipe key placement on the 6Gv2 (down on the Spacebar line rather than on the QWERTY line)–I wanted a brightly and evenly backlit keyboard.Winner on both counts. The G610 has a normal key layout. The white LED backlighting can be set to several levels or turned off, as well as made to pulsate/waterfall/turn individual keys on/off, etc.Lighting features are controlled through the Logitech Gaming software. I already owned a Logitech headset & mouse, and the keyboard popped up in the Gaming software as soon as I connected it.I’m not sure whether the lighting features work in other OS’s, without the Logitech Gaming software – TBD.The Cherry MX Red switches are great. I don’t like clicky keys, and the Reds are very responsive while being about as quiet as possible.By the way, I tried both the G610 and the similar-but-fancier G513. I kept the G610 over the G513. The former’s white-only backlighting is brighter and purer than the G513 in white-mode. The G513 in “white” has a bit of a blue cast to it, also. I didn’t really need multi-color backlighting, so the G610 was perfect for me.The G610’s volume roller is better than volume keys, I think. One can operate it entirely by feel. Less chance of accidentally hitting the wrong key when trying to adjust volume.

Seems like a good keyboard… until you use it for a while

This is my third and (by far) least expensive mechanical keyboard. I bought it for writing code, not for gaming, so typing accuracy is paramount. Most of the time, the keyboard works fine. But at least twice a week, the keyboard freezes up and needs to be unplugged and plugged back into the computer to get it to work again. If you were using this for a FPS game then I think that would mean a quick death. For me, it’s annoying to have my code writing interrupted while I reach around back and get it working again. Also, every few hours, a mystery key fires and causes havoc in my IDE, such as switching windows or launching help into the foreground. It’s really intrusive and leads me to believe that this keyboard is just a little bit too cheap. I never had any problem with my first or second DAS keyboards, the older of which has been working for about 10 years. The backlighting on this keyboard is good, but by default it does some kind of cheesy “wave” across the keys that I immediately need to turn off. Unless you install a driver on the computer, you’re not getting rid of the wave effect.

Great Keyboard for FPS Games, Quieter than Membranes

Logitech G610 Orion Reds, with Cherry MX Red switches. Pretty solid design! Sturdy board with no noticeable flex (I don’t know what situation you would be in to bend said keyboard though.) It is matte black along the top, with a glossy kind of plastic wrapping around all sides of the board. Coming from a long-time PC gamer, the Cherry MX Reds are perfect for FPS games like Counter Strike and Rainbow Six: Siege! The actuation does take some getting used to, like how you don’t have to slam the keys down all the way for them to register. It is a good change though, and helps me with pressing keys in quicker succession, like when I’m using Q and E often to peek in Rainbow Six. I live in a small apartment, so I’m set up in the living room. Sometimes people come over and sleep on the couch, and the Red switches are definitely a lot quieter than my old membrane keyboard. I also bought some rubber O-rings to go along with it just so it is even quieter once the keys bottom out, and they work really well! It’s a very clean layout, not an overly aggressive typeface for the characters. The lights are only white, but can still be configured with different brightnesses and settings in the Logitech Gaming Software! I also have a Logitech G302 Daedalus mouse and although they do not sync lighting when set to breathe, you can configure them in the same program. I just want to be able to see my keys in the night time with dim lighting conditions, so the white LEDs definitely cater more towards quieter setups. I don’t really have any complaints so far, I’ve had this keyboard for over a couple months now, and I’m pretty happy with it!

  5. Mike S,

    Cheaply Made

I bought this item in November 2019. As with all new keyboards it takes awhile to get used to it but it seemed like a quality product. It would have been nice if they added even one line somewhere that the Logitech gaming software was needed to actually use it’s features. But it may have been in there somewhere. I am 70 years old and I suppose Logitech doesn’t realize that everyone can’t easily read a font size of 2.Moving on in early February of 2020 the left ctrl key fell off. I popped it back on and about week later it fell off again and when I looked at the underside of the key cap; I saw that it was broken. I then put in a warranty request to Logitech, which in itself is a major feat of detective work. Over the course of the last month and a half the left alt key has fallen off with the same problem and then the left windows key, which is no loss as that key is one of the many headaches I can live without.Logitech doesn’t stock key cap replacements, they send out a brand new keyboard instead of a 10 cent key cap. Makes me wonder about the true value of the product, although I had a similar issue with Steelseries.Anyway the part of the cap needs a metal ring around where it attaches to the switch as the current design loses it’s grip and eventually breaks. Now if you use your keyboard for just an occasional letter or to look at Facebook, it might last past the warranty period. If you use your keyboard for gaming as I do, then it’s not worth it. I paid 80.00 for a gaming keyboard that lasted 4 months. I can’t really recommend an alternative, although the SteelSeries last almost 2 yeas.

A nice keyboard with some minor flaws.

Hello everyone this is my review on the Logitech G610 Orion Red. You can find the TL;DR at the bottom. :)BUILD QUALITY:The keyboard feels sturdy and has a bit of weight to it which results in a unit that feels robust and fairly high-quality. The top of the keyboard has a nice matte finish and the keycaps also have a matte, almost “satin” finish to them. The side of the keyboard is glossy and will surely attract fingerprints. Matte sides would have been much nicer and the decision to make them glossy seems a bit strange, but it does not seem to be that big a deal. The keycaps do leave a bit to be desired as they seem to be of a lower quality than the rest of the board and from the looks of it these keycaps will be glossing over fairly soon as I put this keyboard to extensive use. The media keys and volume roller situated in the upper right-hand corner of the keyboard both feel of a high quality.KEYCAPS:Do note, and this may be important for some folks, if you want to use custom keycaps, this keyboard does have an odd-size bottom row, particularly the spacebar which comes in at a very weird 5.75u. The entire bottom row on this keyboard is: 1.5u, 1.25u, 1.25u, 5.75u, 1.25u, 1.25u, 1.25u, 1.5u. With enough searching (and of course money) you could probably find keycaps for this bottom row, but do bear in mind that it may not be so easy and once you do find some nicer caps by time you pay for them you could be faced with a situation where the cost of those caps on top of the cost of this board exceeds that of getting a board with better keycaps to begin with. This is perhaps something for you to consider.LIGHTING:The lighting on the G610 only comes in white, however if you like the subdued styling of the keyboard but would prefer more lighting colors there is an RGB option, which is the Logitech G810. It is very similar to this board that in addition to the RGB lighting will feature Logitech’s proprietary Romer-G switches as opposed to the Cherry brown or red switch options available on the G610. Whether one enjoys the feel of Romer-G switches is very much personal preference, but one thing to note with Romer-Gs is the backlighting will be more consistent across each key, unlike Cherry’s keys where thanks to the switch design influencing the placement of the LED, the lighting can be uneven across a key. For example, the bottom half of the keys of the number row (e.g. @, %, ^, &), and the secondary functions of the Numpad (e.g. Arrow Keys, END, PG DN, DEL) will be dimmer than the top half of the key. I have included a picture of a section the number pad demonstrating this. For many it may not be that big a deal, but if you are particular about things like that it may be an issue for you and could be one reason to look into Romer-G switches. Regardless of the inconsistent lighting, you should have no problem seeing everything in a dark room.As far as lighting is concerned you can opt to use Logitech’s software to customize between different effects such as “Breathing,” “Star Effect,” “Light Wave” and things like that or if you would rather not deal with the software you can forgo some of the fancier lighting schemes and simply hold down the keyboard’s Brightness Setting key while pressing numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 0 (0 is for solid) to cycle through different preset lighting schemes. It’s a pretty neat feature. The settings you select through Brightness key + numbers 1-5 and 0 should save through a cold boot. Considering my Logitech G600 mouse features a nice onboard memory that saves lighting and binding profiles, this keyboard could have certainly used something similar which for a unit that retails for $120 would have been nice to have.FINAL THOUGHTS/OPINIONS:This keyboard was a second choice for me as I intended to get a WASD CODE which retails for $150. The only reason I picked this Logitech up is the Cherry MX Red version was available on Amazon for $80 and I wanted to save a bit of money. Personally, I’d be reluctant to pay $100 for this keyboard and certainly not the retail asking price of $120 when for just $30 more I could have gotten a backlit board from WASD which has an even superior build quality, more choice of switches, and keycaps that are easier to replace… along with no “in your face” company logos, no media control switches (which for me are useless) and features onboard memory to easily save lighting profiles. Because of a lack of onboard memory to store lighting and key assignment profiles and because of the completely odd-ball and frankly quite annoying size of the bottom row’s spacebar which makes finding a full set of custom keycaps a nightmare, I will be removing one star.In the end this is a nice keyboard for $80, and even while $100 would be doable it would be stretching it but I do trust the Logitech name and therefore can be pretty certain this keyboard will serve me well for the next few years, even if only as a backup. The flaws I mention are relatively minor and the quality and styling of this board far outweigh them. Personally I do not at all regret the purchase of this keyboard. If you want an easy, simple keyboard from a reputable company go ahead and pick this up and it should serve you well.TL;DR+Solid build quality+Tried and true Cherry MX switches+Backlit with five levels of brightness+Easy to take apart (see youtube for teardowns)+Comfortable to use-Weird sizing for keycaps on bottom row, good luck finding a 5.75u spacebar :(-No onboard memory to save lighting profile, key remaps, etc.-A bit pricey considering no onboard memory, no USB passthrough, etc.-Uneven lighting on some keys. While due to the design of Cherry switches this is not necessarily a fault of Logitech, the company could have opted to orient the keycap’s primary and secondary legends horizontally instead of vertically (e.g. as see on the backlit WASD Code) which would have provided more even lighting across the key.Despite some flaws like a very odd sizing on the keycaps of the bottom row and lack of onboard memory to save lighting and other such profiles, The Logitech G610 Orion Red is solid board and one that I can happily recommend.

Key caps will just fall off.

61 key caps good, 43 key caps broken or fractured. Some of the keys were catching from the day I received this keyboard and I assumed it just needed cleaning. I accidentally spilt a tiny amount of beer on it so I went to work on cleaning. It turns out there was nothing wrong with any of the switches. Some of the keys came off with almost no force, that’s when I started noticing the stem wells were fractured. Some still gave a decent hold strength while others were completely functionless.Other than this, everything else on the board was fine if not pretty good. But I wouldn’t waste anyone’s time recommending this any higher than 1 star. Of course this could just be a bad batch but that hardly justifies another purchase.Edit: final count, 58 good/46 bad. I’ve never had a single key cap break on me on any keyboard I’ve ever owned until this one.

    Great entry level mechanical board.

Coming from a penny pincher background with limited keyboard experience, this board is great! In the past, I always opted for the cheaper, entry level keyboards. Never again!I don’t think I’ve used a keyboard with such a great tactile feel and satisfying audible feedback since my original IBM AT keyboard. The amount of force required to type is perfectly balanced, for me. I can rest my hands on the keys without accidental strokes. Previous membrane keyboards felt like they required more force to register strokes, so typing on the G610 feels effortless. The backlighting makes it easier to use in low light setting. Although the board has a button that allows you to change brightness of the backlighting, the default setting is to have the keys light up in a ‘wave’. Since the human eye is attracted to motion, I find it very distracting to have a wave of light travel across my keyboard. I wish the default setting was to have a constant backlighting, so this is where my rating falls to 4 stars. I’d prefer to not install more software on my PC, but I was forced to install Logitech’s software to control the backlighting.Another minor complaint is the placement of the caps lock/scroll lock/num lock indicator lights. To make room for media control buttons, the indicator lights were moved to the top middle of the board, where it is not so intuitive to figure out which light is which. There are labels etched under each light, but they are unreadable, even in decent lighting levels.Overall, I would highly recommend this board to anyone.

    Cool but weird

I bought this to have a professional mechanical keyboard at work.Openly, I will admit the Cherry MX switches are nice compared to my Corsair K70. There is still noise, but installing o-rings made that issue lessen.Pros:Quality, durable, easy to useLighting effects are coolOffset, braided USB cable is well constructedDual-angle legs are well designed and labeled.Cons:Logitech Gaming Software will be required for controlling lighting effects as some games take over the lighting profile.Keycaps fall off rather easily if you transition your hands left or right too quick during a keypress (Easily fixable by correcting typing behavior, issue lies mostly in the six-key and arrow key zone where I spend one or two key clicks at a time before coming back to the main key area)Lack of wrist rest makes this keyboard uncomfortable as it is elevated 1.5 inches from the desk
