Nice hardware, but with some quality control issues

First off, the hardware itself is nice. I like it better than my Pocket Go or RS-97. The shoulder buttons are especially nice, but all the controls feel good and once you tweak CPU settings, even PS1 can run well on this thing. The screen is beautiful and big. It’s a nice device. However, mine arrived with some weird air bubbles under the screen– mostly visible when there’s a dark screen– and with pieces of dust trapped under the glass lens. For the price, I expect to have a dust-free screen without air bubbles, and I’m not terribly pleased by this being how it arrived to me. I’m not keen on returning it, either, because that would mean waiting and being without it after I already customized the software to my liking. And I have to say, this doesn’t bode well for the RG350. If the RG300 comes to me with screen quality control issues, paying more for the upcoming model and dealing with this sort of thing again is not appealing.Four stars. It would be five if the screen lens didn’t have air bubbles and dust underneath it upon arrival.

Not perfect but still a great pocket player

Doesn’t emulate much better than the rs97, but the ergonomics beat it out for me. It has a gameboy style layout which is more comfortable for extended play and easier to pocket. Battery life is great, I get about five hours on full brightness. Its easy to switch out firmware when the time comes due to the system sd card being accessible once the battery is removed. The included sd card that slots into the side has a decent selection with most being in english, I went ahead and loaded my copy of Emerald version due to it not being included. Only manufacturing issues I could find are a small amout of light leak through the blue “x” button and the volume wheel being quite touchy, it goes from zero to loud with only a small adjustment. Screen gets decently bright and speaker is clear until you hit the highest end where it gets distorted. Also, it uses usb C which all of my other devices use for the most part which makes finding a charger easier compared to some of these devices that sometimes still use the mini usb connection. All in all it is a great little GBA machine that’ll be my pocket player until something substantially better comes out in this price range.

Works Great. Changed 4 Stars to 5.

#Edit (from 4stars to 5)The white line went awayLet me start off by saying that this system is great. Works amazingly and feels extremely comfortable.#32GB SD CardThe 32 GB SD card is Soujaboyed with a Bunch of ROMS (Some are Legit ROMS some are Modified) All of the ones I tested did run. Although some did have Asian text and some were comically modified for example (SNES – Super Mario Jumping for Ever Higher and Higher until the goal).I had issues adding/reading ROMS to the SD Card due to the cheap quality, but this is a SD Card issue not a system issue. I was finally able to Backup all the ROMS from the included SD card to my own and now everything is great.#ROMS – SaveFilesKeep in mind that when adding your own ROMS that the system reads Save Files from a different Internal Hidden folder, usually “/home/retrofw/.(emulator name)/saves” If you are familiar with Linux then this will be no issue for you. just use the app named Commander it is a File Manager, there you will be able to move files to and from the SD Card to Local Storage.#System TimeI noticed that Games that keep track of time (Pokemon) do not keep real time so do look out for that. . I have less than 16 hours with the system so I may figure out how to fix this since the machine is basically a mini linux computer (a plus)#This issue resolved itself#My Issue (Probably defected System) – 1 StarOn boot right out the box I noticed a white vertical line dead center of the screen. It’s very noticeable on everything, I don’t know if this is a issue present in other devices or just my unit I will be reaching out to the seller/amazon for a possible solution.#ScreenThe Screen gets really bright and has nice colors. I watched some YouTube reviews before purchasing and they got a few details wrong and some which pertain to an older model. This Screen looks amazing (minus the vertical white line in the center). It does get really bright some emulator options do effect the brightness like filter options. I noticed that there are 2 GB/GBC emulators one of them is brighter and uses better colors (OhBoy).#SoundLove the speaker gets really loud and clean sound.Again just wanted to say that I have less than 16 hours with the system on hand and only about an hour or 2 of testing. So I will update if any issues come up while using it after a week or 2.

    Retro Yet Modern

I bought this just little over a day ago and, after being glued to it for a good four-plus hours, I think this is a solid winner. I initially waited out on the sudden burst of open source emulator consoles that took Amazons retro gaming scene by storm with numerous LDK and RS9 clones, with this being an example of the latter, which I feel like for one critical reason handles ease of use better than other systems like the PocketGo. I’m not very technologically apt so I specifically went with this one so I don’t have to bust out a screwdriver every time I want to mess with the firmware. For first impressions, the design of this console is very cute, not all of it being more of the same having odd additions I’ll probably never use. The one I got was in clear smoke (clear black for the cool dudes), which personally fits the early 2000’s handheld aesthetic very well. It has a sensible button layout made even more useful with trigger buttons. I would say my first complaint with the design is the arrangement of the ABXY buttons, but I figure some settings tinker and a screwdriver will fix that up. However, the buttons and ergonomics are really great. The triggers use OMRON which actually is an established Japanese brand of micro switches used in various computer mice and maybe even other equipment — I had no idea of such a thing until I did a little research online. The RG-300’s screen has an acceptable quality to it, not the richest colors but the brightness and viewing angles are good with no ghosting or other artifacts. In terms of ergonomics I have smaller hands so, these proper OG Gameboy style designs are no problem for me. I’d add that the form factor coupled with really great triggers makes it a breeze to play, after a while my fingers slip from the shoulders, and this is the only other handheld console outside the 3DS I’ve owned that circumvents that issue. The sound is about the poorest thing about this and I only care for the AUX and USB-C, not the A/V Out feature. I like that I can take out the battery and just pull out the Boot Disk (second MicroSD Card) when the moment arises. As far as emulation is concerned, it’s a hit with most emulators but some games that tax the consoles it emulates is very picky with Game Boy Advanced and Super Nintendo, though those two are notorious for having middling emulation on anything that isn’t a PC. You get what you pay for on cheap gaming. I have fun running the full Atari 2600 library but beware, loading a folder full of 100+ ROMS seems to tax the OS which will resolve itself if you let it standby for a few seconds and wake it back up. I have to take a star off my score because of that problem, which I hope actually gets fixed at some point because I am seriously considering using this as a my daily retro gaming platform. As far as battery life, it can vary widely from emulator to emulator, Arcade and SNES in particular is most battery taxing due to being more resource heavy.Overall, I will have to give this a 4/5 for the current standing, and will update if anything changes for better or for worse.

No longer comes with 32GB Card, otherwise very fun

The listing for the IPS version says it comes with a 16GB and 32GB card and it only comes with the 16GB. The seller has said that the listing is out of date. Hopefully they will get that sorted out. The 16GB card is extremely slow and the 32GB probably would be as well so most likely not missing out on much anyways. The device has worked well and the screen is bright and clear. The 16GB card is effectively full when it arrives and I was unable to save an SNES game that I was playing. I moved over to a larger sd card I already owned but you could also remove some of the multitude of games, the sample video, or sample audio and do alright with the packaged card. Some of the games don’t actually work for me (i.e. Cannonball) so there’s some dead weight you can ditch. The included SD card had a sustained read speed of only 11MB/s when I made a copy of it. I switched to a Samsung card with a 95MB/s read speed and the device loaded games more quickly after the switch. The main SD card is under the battery and a secondary card can be inserted into the side of the unit. The volume adjustment wheel is very sensitive. The wheel has a lot of travel but the adjustment only works over a very short span so you have to be careful to get it just right, but it does work. There are also volume adjustments in the software which might be preferable. The variety of games is very good. If your favorite isn’t included you should be able to find it online somewhere and copy it on to the device.I have built a PiGrrl 2 and this is better in the following ways: better quality buttons, larger screen, higher resolution screen, volume wheel, headphone jack, 2 SD card slots, removable battery, much thinner and smaller.

    Great Gameboy-inspired retro handheld

The RG300 is a great retro handheld capable of playing 8-bit and 16-bit games. If you want something that can play PS1 games, then you should look at the RG350. The RG300 comes with a ton of games, so many in fact that you’ll need to delete some games to have room on the micro SD card to save your progress in games. The battery life is about 6 hours or so (depending on the game you’re playing). The size, weight and form factor are very comfortable to hold and very pocketable. The only flaws I’ve noticed with the RG300 are with the volume dial and the d-pad. The volume dial is not gradual, particularly at the lower end so it’s very hard to get it to play sound at a low volume. The d-pad feels good and is not too soft or too stiff but it’s easy to mistakenly go diagonal when you actually mean to go up/down/left/right. Other than that, I highly recommend the RG300 if you’re looking for a Gameboy-inspired retro handheld that can play 8-bit/16-bit games.

Great way to play games from my childhood!

I was looking for a device to play games from my childhood. I saw some video reviews of the RG300 on YouTube and was pleased to see that I could get it on Amazon. If you are looking to just play the games that come with the device (there are a lot of games) then it is relatively easy to use. The software/firmware is definitely not polished compared to something Nintendo would put out (like with the DS devices). It is a little complicated to add ROMS (games) to the device, especially if you aren’t used to messing around with ROMs and emulators. The RG300 is very particular about which emulators you can add. They have to be .dge files (OpenDingux). The device itself works great. It feels nice in my hands. The buttons work great. The screen looks nice. The left and right buttons are in a perfect spot in the back.Overall, I am very happy with the device. I have been able to play lots games from the SNES, NES, and Gameboy. It’s great being able to play games from my past in a nice portable device that I can take anywhere.

Good handheld retro emulator with some quirks

This is a really good handheld for the price, it has some quirks but overall you’ll love it if you’re into retro gaming.I love the form factor, it’s comfortable to hold, compact and light. The plastic isn’t top notch, but the d-pad and the face buttons are good (not great). The d-pad and the X, Y, A, B, select and start buttons are rubber membrane based while the shoulder buttons and the brightness and menu buttons use some sort of mechanical switch which makes them loud. The shoulder buttons are comfortable to use, but the other two require slightly more force to press. Luckily they aren’t used during gameplay. The screen isn’t perfect, but it’s a solid IPS panel, has nice vivid colors, excellent brightness and it’s 60hz. The only issue is that pixels have a weird placement pattern where each odd row seems shifted slightly (maybe by one or two subpixels?) to the side. Overall, it won’t bother you, but the image has a slight checkerboard feel to it.The CPU is dated and underpowered, but it can emulate older consoles well. SNES won’t run at full 60 FPS for most games, but Sega Genesis and older 8 bit console emulators will. 2D PlayStation games run well, too. Some better than SNES games. For 3D PlayStation games you need to adjust your expectations. Some might hit 50 FPS, but most of them will run at 30ish.There’s an active open source community and, even though the emulators for this handheld are ports of older emulators (with lower requirements but also lower emulation accuracy), they are somewhat maintained. There’s also an alternative firmware which is up-to-date and includes some speed improvements.By far, the worst part of this handheld is the sound control. The internal speaker itself is fine, but the control wheel is weird, it jumps from barely audible to full blast just by moving it slightly. Luckily, this doesn’t happen when using headphones, but, for some reason, when pushing the volume all the way up, one of the channels cuts off, so you need to bring it down slightly to hear sound from both ear buds.Overall, I like it. Not great, not terrible.

Great device, but not for everybody

I’ve had the gray IPS version for a couple weeks now. Overall it’s a great device for emulating lots of old consoles, but people should know that it takes a little bit of work to get it there.I was already planning on flashing new firmware on it, but I tested it straight out of the box. It immediately started having problems freezing up randomly, even when adjusting the brightness. After opening a certain Master System ROM, it froze and after a restart it was no longer able to open any games. If you’re not able/willing to get a couple new microSD cards and flash new firmware onto one of them, this device probably won’t last very long. It’s not as simple as the description makes it out to be.On the hardware side of things, this little console is excellent. The D-pad is silent and responsive, like an SNES controller but with a little more room to press down. The face buttons are a little clicky and too rounded on the top, but work well and respond reliably. The tempered glass screen protector is nice and has withstood some wear and tear without scratching. My IPS screen has some noticeable light bleed on the right side, but I wasn’t expecting a flawless display for this price. And the display gets very bright, with colors that really pop.Battery life is decent. I don’t think it gets 6 hours as advertised, even playing mostly simpler emulators like NES and SMS. And it takes about 3 hours to charge, much longer than I would expect for 1800 mah.

Solid little emulation device for the 16 bit generation.

I bought this handheld specifically to introduce my son to GBA NES SNES and a fees others either in that generation or before. This console hits most of the marks required for an emulation device.Design:It is very well sedigned (It should be because it takes most of it’s design cues after the GameBoy). The plastic feels solid and looks very attractive. I got the frosted black version and it really looks and feels like a brand name condole. The buttons are another positive for this little console. The D pad is almost identical to the GBA, the shoulder buttons are responsive and have a satisfying click to it (similar to the DSi).Volume wheel need improvement as it is very sensitive and I find it sitting either being too loud or to quiet. It takes effort to get it dialed inOver all a very attractive design that it’s sure to turn some heads.Performance:It emulates up to GBA, SNES and other 16bit generation games very well. With some games that have a certain area with unusual graphic effects you may notice a slight slowdown (I turn on frames kip for these). But over all a solid emulation device if you recognize it’s limits.Given the limited processing power of this little guy, don’t expect it to run PS games well. I have tried a couple but the experience is abismal. I didn’t buy it to play these types of games so I don’t mind it at all.I can definitely recommend this little guy for anyone trying to play 16bit games and under. The aesthetics of it’s design, the screen and the performance makes this a perfect nostalgia machine.
