Finally, a very good PS4 remote

Finally, a PS4 media remote that equals the responsiveness of the Sony PS3 remote. My knock on the previous iteration of a PS4 remote was just how poorly it was implemented–from an off state to connected took about 7 secs, and not only that, only the PS and PS4 selector buttons initiated a connection from the off state. This made using the remote while watching anything longer than 30 min (the auto shut off period) to be extremely annoying. But I am glad to say that this remote not only corrects the time-to-connect down to about 2 secs, but also any key initiates the connection, and then executes it. So, no longer do I hit the pause button, maybe hit it again, realize the remote turned off, hit the PS4 selector button, wait 7 secs, then hit pause… I just hit pause and either it happens instantly or within 2-3 secs, which is acceptable and understandable given the constraints of a bluetooth connection. From a functional view, it has added in buttons for the L/R 1/2 controls, though it does lack L/R3 buttons. I have found that some applications do not react to the L/R 1/2 buttons as well, though I have confirmed that they are working by using them with the PS4’s on-screen keyboard successfully. And, of course, it is not a multifunction remote. It cannot control a TV/DVD/BD/audio device–it is a pure PS4 remote, which is fine as this cuts down on the array of buttons one has to search through. For the purpose of controlling video apps, it is highly recommended over a native DS4 controller for the reason that is is very easy to accidentally trigger L/R2 when laying the controller down on a surface, thus perhaps accidentally causing the video to skip, depending on the app. And with the well-recognized media functions keys (play/pause/etc.) one doesn;t usually have to think about what button does what compared to a controller.

    Good media remote

Good remote that makes all of the controls obvious.Pros:- Nice form factor, so I don’t have to balance a PS4 controller on my arm-rest.- Connects via Bluetooth like the PS4 controllers.- The setup was pretty easy to link it to my PS4.- The remote shuts off after 30 minutes, but it doesn’t have the annoying “dualshock has been disconnected” message like a PS4 controller that interrupts my movie watching experience.- If the remote is powered off, hitting any button will turn the remote back on, and it will still register the button you hit. For example, if you were to pause a movie an hour into watching it, you hit the pause button and the remote will turn back on and pause the movie. There is a slight lag, because the remote is waking up, but the controls register as you’d expect when the remote is already on.- Can be used to turn off and turn on my PS4.Cons:- It has all of the same functionality as a PS4 controller, for all intents and purposes, so if you don’t watch many movies/media, it might not be worth it for you.

    Good remote, could be better.

Works fine, but seems to burn through batteries somewhat quickly. I wish it had a rechargeable battery in it or something because buying AAA batteries all the time is the WORST. I also wish you didn’t have to manually turn the remote off via the console, as it’s a little tedious and seems unnecessary. When turning it on after replacing the batteries, you’ll have to hit the PS button or it won’t turn on. After that you can press any button and it will both register the input and turn on the remote. Build quality is perfectly acceptable. The directional and L/R buttons aren’t the easiest to identify without looking at them as they are not raised and have nothing on their faces to tell them apart, save for the label, which I’ve not been able to read in the dark. They’re too close together, so I’ve occasionally hit an arrow and an L/R button at the same time, which is annoying when entering my PIN to log in. Decent product, officially endorsed by Sony, I believe. It is technically made by a third party though.

Was a pointless and frustrating experience for me

Our regular ps4 remotes are failing and are so expensive to replace. We only really use our ps4 for media, so I was very excited when I found this remote. However, I noticed issues right away. I was able to sync it with little problems, and it worked to control in apps like Netflix, hulu, vudu, ect. It also worked on dvds, but the buttons would “stick”. I would be scrolling through Netflix and it would get stuck scrolling and scrolling and scrolling. Also the buttons would sometimes not work at all until we had pressed them several times. I figured we could live with that if it worked in general. Well, after less than a week it stopped working and went completely dead. It wasn’t the batteries and it wasn’t damaged, it just wouldn’t sync and wouldn’t control anything. The red light barely lit too. So I ordered a replacement hoping it was just a faulty remote. Guess what….exact same issues from the start, only this one went dead after less than 48 hours. This was so disappointing. I honestly don’t understand why its so hard to make a working remote for the ps4. I really can’t afford another sixty for a gaming remote when we only use it for media. Please put out a working remote, somebody!!!I am happy for the people that loved this product. I wish I had been one of them.

Great things in a small package…at a great price.

Finally, a PS4 remote that works exactly as I needed it to.The family and I “Cut the cord” a little over a year ago and have been using our PS4 as the main media hub, primarily Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon, and I hated using the game controller. You barely tap that thing and you’re fast forwarding or exiting out of your show, and there’s the concern about one’s 3 year old breaking your $50.00 controller.I had bought the previous “All in One” Media remote before but over half of the functions didn’t work with my set-up so I took it back.I’ve been eye-balling this one for months and when it dropped to $14.99…I pounced. This controller is streamlined and very easy to use, it has all the functions of the game controller, so you won’t get the option for channels, volume, or power of your TV.Which is fine by me since we’ve gotten used to the game controller.Battery life seems fine, been using it since last Thursday (12-28-17) with no drain yet.Very happy with my purchase and I highly recommend it, especially at this price.

Great size and functionality for PS Vue

Your browser does not support HTML5 video.

Recently started using PS Vue and the wife wasn’t too keen on using a PS4 controller to navigate the television guide. The universal remote seems unnecessarily large and complicated. This one seemed smaller and more simple, which is what I wanted. The Media Remote pairs easily enough with the PS4. Navigating the PS Vue guide takes a little practice with it, but I’ve gotten used to it and much prefer it to using the controller. The remote does go to “sleep” after 30 min, much like the controller. However, unlike the controller which you have to reconnect first before using it, the remote will auto-connect with the press of any button. Makes getting back into the guide a bit quicker. My only complaint, and maybe I just haven’t figured it out, is I can’t seem to find a way to jump back to the “last” channel with this remote. Using a controller, you would press the center thumb pad, which would bring up the option to jump to last. This remote lacking that pad has no way that I’ve found to bring up that quick menu.UPDATE: Just wanted to update this review at just over a year later, we still use this remote daily and still love it. Highly recommend this remote for PS4 and PS Vue.

    Updated review 18 months later

Original Review: Like another reviewer said, buttons in the center are very close together, but after getting used to the orientation the user should be fine. Illumination would be nice as well for $24.99, but this does eliminate having to use the PS4 controller for playback. Pairs perfectly and right away, range is great, and the response time is super fast. It’s not perfect, but it sure serves its purpose and gets the job done.UPDATED 2/27/19: So I had to buy another one of these remotes back in late September/early October 2018. The original I had purchased in August of 2017 stopped working completely and I figured it was just a fluke, maybe bad craftsmanship, so I bought another. While the original made it about a year, the most recent one literally just stopped working and is refusing to respond as I type this review. This remote didn’t even last 6 full months. Originally I stood by this product and thought it was an excellent accessory for the PS4 – especially for people who use it for media – but now I have to say it is a poorly made unit and you should not waste your money. It appears I cannot make a return with Amazon, or even file for a replacement copy to be shipped to me. January 29th would have been the last day for that. Interesting timing… Either way, I wish I could recommend this, because it is quite useful when it works, but the potential drawbacks outweigh the usefulness and make it definitely not worth the 25 dollar asking price. Thanks for reading, best of luck on your hunt for a solid remote.Sony, please make a legitimate licensed remote for PS4 media that is reminiscent of the original PS3 remote!

Don’t buy it for everyday use.

Works good- only problem is that they go through batteries like crazy!!! And it has a “battery saving function “ that basically turns the remote off to save battery. I guess it’s like a sleep mode. The remote shuts down if not in use. Well you can be watching a movie and need to pause. But the remote won’t work because it’s sleeping. It just ends up being super annoying. You have to press the buttons multiple times to wake it up- and by then you’ve pressed it too many times. It’s aggravating. I’ve had it for about a month or so and I’ve had to replace the batteries more than 3 times.

    Guzzles batteries and suddenly died

Works great and is far better than trying to use the PS4 controller for DVD/Bluray navigation. The arrow buttons are a little too sensitive and I double-click them all the time accidentally but that’s a minor issue.UPDATE: it seems to chew through batteries pretty quickly (already blew through a pair of new AAA’s in less than a month) and like another reviewer, mine has suddenly stopped working even with fresh batteries. Will have to return if it doesn’t start working again in a day or two…UPDATE 2: Never worked again and it’s too late to return to Amazon. Will be contacting the manufacturer. Shame.

Works for PS5 and better than the PS5 media remote at that

I originally bought this for my PS4 so I wouldn’t constantly have my blu rays fast forwarding every time I set the controller down. I had it connected for 2-3 months before my PS5 finally took its place as my primary media player; I had bought the designated PS5 media remote thinking it would work well with physical media, but I was mistaken. I ended up disconnecting this one from my PS4 and connected it to the PS5 and it works so much better than the PS5 media remote, but it works great for either the PS4 or the PS5. You can accomplish anything you want with physical media with this remote. Subtitles, skip chapters, menu etc.. everything. Which can’t be said for the newest PS5 media remote, you can’t do any of those things. If you use it heavily the batteries will need to be replaced every 6 weeks or so, so keep that in mind when purchasing. The battery life is the only draw back, but it’s still a 5/5 for me since it does everything I’d need it to do for Blu-Ray/DVD. I’m not sure how much longer this will be produced, but I’d suggest getting ASAP with there already being a next gen console and a new media remote to replace this one.
