Terrible platform elements, not enough ammo. Annoying, not fun.

Not worth the wait or the money. Constantly short of ammo even in easiest mode, it’s more like a rubbish horror survival than a fast paced shooter. Worse though are the endless platform pixel perfect jumps required all over the place. It’s not Mario; Nintendo know how to do platforms, Bethesda do not.Very dissapointed, not neally as good as previous doom.

    Incredible

At first I really didn’t like this one, I thought Doom 2016 was much better. I thought there was way too much platforming, and way too much upgrading and mods. BUT the platform elements are to teach you how to perform better in the battles, and the upgrades and mods are done after 50% of the game, so the rest of the time you can just have fun and destroy demons. I’m playing on the 2nd level difficulty, which is still pretty tough, but enough of a challenge to keep the game tense and hard. I’m about two levels away from the end of the game I think, and honesty it’s far superior to Doom 2016 and a really fun and enjoyable FPS. It takes time to learn all the demon’s weaknesses, and to know which weapon to use, but once you’ve got that down then the rest is just really fun and enjoyable. And the music is brilliant. Not for those who need a story, because this is straightforward action/arcade-style glory killing and demon slaying.

DOOM Eternal is unapologetically gamey, and a well-crafted gameplay experience at that.

DOOM Eternal is not only an improvement over its 2016 counterpart, but one of the best single-player FPS games out there. It leans more heavily into its gameplay-focused experience than even its predecessor did, and while the more colourful visuals and bombastic nature might turn some people away, I have to applaud Id Software for making a focused, balanced, well-crafted game that puts gameplay first, in an industry with no shortage of soulless, joyless, slow, boring movie-like games that force you a shallow story pretending to be high art.The weapons are balanced in a way that ensures players will utilize everything at their disposal. Every weapon has its use for each given combat encounter, and the fast rate players will run out of ammo and be required to chainsaw-kill an enemy to replenish it creates a satisfying loop of attacking, evading and collecting resources. The designers took a hard look at DOOM 2016 and ensured players wouldn’t be able to rely on one dominant strategy for all situations (like how the Super Shotgun could trivialise each fight before). That’s not to say they didn’t skimp out on the weapons, however. There are plenty to choose from, weapon mods make a return, there’s now two different grenade types with different purposes, and the flamethrower known as Flame Belch that can harvest armour from any enemies set ablaze. The level design is solid, and if this is your first foray into the new DOOM series, then you may be taken aback by how much platforming there is, with the occasional light puzzle-solving thrown in to break up the pace of the gameplay. Much more preferable than forcing the player down linear, unskippable walking sections like most triple-A western games do nowadays. Plenty of collectibles to find, ranging from character action-figures, to vinyl records that let you play music from past Id Software titles, to Sentinel Batteries that unlock more goodies on the hub-area; The Fortress of DOOM. There are even 6 optional Slayer Gates, brutal combat gauntlets that, if survived and completed, award you keys that unlock a super-weapon. So not only do we have fun level design reminiscent of older 3D games like Metroid Prime, but even mechanics akin to character-action games like Devil May Cry and Bayonetta. The story is even more non-intrusive than the first game, getting right to the good stuff and not wasting your time by halting your progress and forcing you to listen to long-winded, quantitative, expository dialogue. While I would have liked a bit more build-up to certain story beats, there is once again plenty of lore to discover and read up on, for those who want to know the finer details. Other than that though, most returning players from DOOM 2016 won’t have missed any details crucial to their enjoyment.Visuals are breath-taking. The game was made on the Id-tech 7 engine, which is an upgrade from DOOM 2016. Textures are more crisp and detailed, the lighting is as good as ever, and the game’s framerate is still a stable 60fps even on base-consoles. I played it on a PS4 Pro, and I can’t recall any moments during combat when the framerate dipped, which, considering how many demons you fight at once, and how much larger combat areas are than before, is a technical marvel. The game ditches its darker edge from DOOM 2016 for a more colourful artstyle. It’s still got the grit, detail and gore you’ve come to expect in DOOM games, and plenty of areas just scream hellish and metal, but the more artistic approach ensures the game will stand the test of time far longer, while also paying homage to classic DOOM games. The audio design is spot-on. Each weapon has the right impact you’d expect from it (e.g. shotguns pack a powerful punch, plasma rifle has very sci-fi style blasting sounds etc), some hilarious popping sounds will play if you pluck certain demons’ eyeballs out, and let’s not forget the fitting soundtrack. Mick Gordon returns as the composer, and if you ask me, outdoes his work on the previous game. So many of these songs are hard to forget, and it’s easy for me to associate them with the levels they were used in. Mick’s influences from 90’s game music really show in the soundtrack, which helps add to the whole experience of a brand-new shooter with as pure a focus on gameplay as a 90’s game would have.If I had to level some criticisms though, the first would be towards the Marauder enemy type, and its implementation in every difficulty above the normal Hurt Me Plenty mode. I played the game on Ultra Violence, and for the most part, it was surprisingly fair. I felt like my deaths were my own mistakes, and that by overcoming each challenge, I was getting better at the game and playing it exactly how it was meant to be played. But the Marauder’s AI is made in such a way that it completely disrupts the pace of the game, works against everything the game had been built around up until that moment, and makes for a frustrating, cheap and unfair challenge when other enemies are surrounding you. Facing him one-on-one isn’t so bad, and I didn’t mind the first battle with him as a mini-boss, but it was very disappointing that they threw him into more combat encounters throughout the game, and I dreaded every second of it. Considering how well-designed all the other demons are in the game, it’s a shame that the Marauder is the exact opposite, and can actually hurt the enjoyment of the game whenever he appears. My second complaint is Battlemode. While it is enjoyable, more unique than DOOM 2016’s multiplayer, and more in line with what you’d expect from a DOOM game, I didn’t feel any need to keep playing it once I unlocked every trophy associated with it. There are only 6 maps as of this review, and 5 demons to play as. Gameplay just isn’t as varied or exciting as the single-player campaign, or even DOOM 2016’s multiplayer at its best, derivative though that may have been. I don’t play a DOOM game for the multiplayer, and I’m glad Id lent into their strengths with the single-player campaign (with more DLC for it soon to follow), but if they were going to add a multiplayer bonus to the game, then they should have at least given it more depth and meaningful replay value beyond “fly for a minute as a Revenant” or “play as DOOM Slayer or a demon 50 times”. It’s by no means as big of an issue as the Marauder in the campaign is, but I still think it needs more work. And lastly, the game forced me to make a Bethesda account when all I wanted to do was play the single-player campaign of a game I paid £50 for. This needs to stop. I don’t care if it’s quick or easy to do, I shouldn’t need to sign up for anything to play the single-player component of a game. I don’t even care if I lose out on rewards, it shouldn’t be mandatory. DOOM 2016 never forced me to do this, even during the multiplayer. We should all be holding Bethesda accountible for this one until they remove this restriction, because believe it or not, not everyone has internet access all the time, or even at all. To force this upon paying customers defeats the whole purpose of a single-player component.Overall, I’d say DOOM Eternal is both an ideal sequel to DOOM 2016, and living proof that a first-person shooter campaign doesn’t need to follow realistic conventions or popular design trends to be successful. It just has to be fun, engaging, and challenging but fair. Despite the flaws I previously mentioned, I let the end credits roll feeling satisfied, and with the utmost respect for the people at Id Software for proving single-player fps games can still be worthy contenders for Game of the Year, without compromising on great gameplay.

    Classic Doom

I actually found Doom 2016 to be a bit repetitive and boring. Corridor romping aside, I much preferred Doom 3. Enter Doom Eternal! From the outset this game is a jump in at the deep end- it’s crazy fast. I had to turn down the movement speed to near slowest and after a few levels switch to the ‘easiest level’. I’m not a hardcore FPSer and these settings fortunately worked just fine for me. There are a few difficult jumps although for the most part these helped to break up the relentless battle set pieces. Towards the end of the game said battles got overwhelming. Isn’t that the point? Not once did the frame rate stutter. Pushed my PS4 to the limits and it coped admirably. I’m almost there….almost. Gave up on Dark Souls because it was stupid difficult. Doom Eternal on the other hand is fun difficult. I won’t be giving up!

Not as good as Doom 2016

Firstly, what i like is the difficulty, which is way ramped up from Doom 2016: you have limited resources so you have to be more strategic with your weapons: the chainsaw to salvage ammunition, and the flamethrower to generate armour shards (the more you shoot enemies on fire, the more they drop). You get battered from all sides so constantly have to be on the move, which is also fantastic. However, the major downer is the platforming, which is truly horrible: you will find yourself (from the 2nd level onward, constantly being frustrated by bad level design and will suffer death, after death, after death). There is nothing natural about its inclusion: it’s clunky as hell, and frustrating as hell to suffer a cheap, platforming death after surviving an onslaught from all sides. Sorry to be a spoil-sport, but it drove me bonkers. Overall, the combat is great, but the platforming really detracts from the game in a big way.

    Not great actually 7/10

Doom Eternal is Doom but worse .Lots of pointless Platform sections ruin the fluidity and there are a lot of these sections, so if you hate platforming games as I do think pretty hard wether you purchase this game or not because the platform sections are terrible. The grapple is a cool addition I guess but all in all this game is worse than the last game. Note for parents this game is very Gory, it is rated 18+ after all so if your child wants this please don’t buy. Maybe buy them the new Animal Crossing Island living game instead for the Nintendo Switch instead 🙂

Solid entry in a solid series.

FYI: The steel poster is the size as the case of the game if that wasn’t clear but it’s a nice little piece that looks good on the shelf. The game itself is great. It’s a bit more narrative driven than 2016 and has a lot more classic Doom tropes like the rad suit and some classic demons so that made the game much more enjoyable for me so any longtime fans will love it. Good balance of nostalgia, narrative, ingenuity and mayhem. The gameplay is as balls to the wall as you’d expect but with even more balls. Dashes, wall climbing, fire meat hooks, arm swords, shoulder grenades, the lot.Level design is quite staggering at times which is something I never thought I’d say about a Doom game. Beautiful earth scenery of giant mechas frozen in combat after piercing the heart of some oversized demon. Some levels where you delve into some gore nests really capture that pinky bloody look of the classic games which was cool for me.One negative I have to note is there are some missions where it gets a bit overkill. I played first time on ultra violence for a bit of a challenge but not too hard for me but even I struggled with it at times. There are some levels where after taking on 2 Mancubus, a cyber mancubus, 3 arachnotrons, 2 revenants, a mass amount of imps, possessed soldiers and cute little cacodemons, they decide to chuck double that at you the moment after you defeat the first wave. It’s manageable with glory kills for health, chainsaw for ammo and the loot on the floor but after however many waves theres no more ammo, no more chainsaw fuel and no more imps to chainsaw even if you had the fuel. Blood punch helps if you upgrade it a bit but not by much. Like I said, it’s manageable but you gotta be a bit more ammo conscious and health conscious this time around than Doom 2016.The fortress of Doom is a fun little place to hang out as well, a nice little addition. Love the wall of collectables and the two suits you can get.The online mode is fun but only a little gimmick in all fairness. Fun for a few matches or to get some trophies but nothing long term, for me anyway. Other people might enjoy it day in day out though. Hopefully they add a death match soon.Rip and tear boys, rip and tear.
