    Poor Quality Overall

Note my first review has vanished.Good – Plays a load of items. Great battery life and screen.Bad – Mine arrived clearly as a used/returned product. Missing the usb cable in the box and the unit itself was dirty and covered in fingerprints. I didn’t return it as after a good cleaning it looked good as new.Second major issue is the build quality. The d-pad is terrible once again give you inputs you don’t want. On my unit the dpad even starts to squeak…. odd I know. After 6 months with the unit the plastic at the screen hinge is cracking and causes the screen to not close properly. This makes is so the screen flops around and doesn’t shut off half the time when i close the unit.Overall – internals are great but the case itself is a huge failure. I own an original Win GPD and my case 2 years on with that unit is still perfect so I wonder how they got this one so wrong.

A must have for a mobile gamer!

So this is the second Chinese Handheld I’ve purchased to experiment with this year… the first being an RK2020 Linux Based unit… I must say, the GPD XD Plus is more user friendly as it uses Android. The Stock ROM, however, is full of software I wouldn’t run on my worst enemy’s PC… so there’s a good solution there: root the device and install CleanROM…So with CleanROM and some minor tweaking, I’ve gotten 60% of GameCube games running and playable in Dolphin Emulator, 99% of N64 games running flawlessly in M64Plus FZ, 100% PlayStation Compatibility on ePSXe, and Dreamcast running flawlessly on Reicast….I had some issues getting GTA San Andreas Android Port working properly but after a little research, I found a texture pack that had to be dropped into the android files in order for it to work.Build Quality of this device is 10/10. Buttons are good and clicks, hinges are better than what’s in the 3DS, Joysticks have an appropriate deadzone.I’d highly recommend buying this device over other Chinese handhelds as it’s easier to use and easier to load the SD card. Keep in mind that it is running an older version of Android, (7.0) so not all apps on the google play store will be available to download.

    Obsessed

My boyfriend has replaced me with this gaming device. Okay, maybe a little less dramatic, because the thing can’t feed him. I guess he still needs me for that. But on a serious note, it is always in his pocket. He has several handheld gaming options and this is his go to. If you are on the fence, just buy it. It is good quality, has a decent weight and size to it, the buttons and joysticks are nice. 5 stars- Would Recommend.

Seems great but more work than its worth

I really do love this thing, but I’ve invested an inordinate amount of time into it. If you’re willing to put in the time, this thing is the best, otherwise, I’d pass. The software that ships on it is incredibly crappy and filled with crapware. There are sites online that detail how to root the device and put a cleaner rom on it. THIS IS REQUIRED FOR A GOOD EXPERIENCE. Then you can better organize things and trust the thing isn’t “phoning home” to China….Otherwise, with the stock software, its very hard to figure out how to do basic tasks like loading ROMs etc. The documentation is nonexistent, and lots of the UI is in Chinese too, so its basically useless to me.

    OOOHHHHHH YEA

This thing kicks some major a**. Ok, it’s not really turn key. It works out of the box but you get the most out of it by installing different emulators. At 1st it was a bit confusing. Once I got the hang of how it works you’re good to go. I am using it with retroarch, mupen64plus fz, reicast, epsx and ppsspp to cover all the bases. For a front end I am using arc browser. Yea, it was a pain the but to install and configure, it took a week and was extremely confusing to do, there are lots of online tutorials and forums that give solid advice on how to do this. Dude this thing kicks major ass. It runs almost everything I want smoothly.

    Absolutely Wonderful

Awesome product I got it sooner than expected I am a little late with this review and I apologize for that, but here it goes the product handles well even when you wouldn’t think it would the only reason why I didn’t give it 5 stars is cause AAA games are good but just not quite there which is a bummer the videos I watched and the research I did made it seem like it could keep up even on low settings but unfortunately for some games that are I guess you can say a bit more demanding it will not handle, but at least you can stream. However for emulation that is a sweet spot for this awesome device, overall I recommend this for an above average gamer who loves to game on the goes

the most obvious choice also consequently being the worst (imagine A and X being reversed with B and …

Product itself is solid, thus far in my own testing. The software environment is a little odd to get used to. For example there are three different flavors of SNES Emulators out of the box, and they all have different input configurations, the most obvious choice also consequently being the worst (imagine A and X being reversed with B and Y while trying to play Super Nintendo games …). They were all in English, though, in case you’re looking this product up after seeing Linus Tech Tips’ product review. However, the handheld runs Android 7, has Play Store and all my important purchased apps from there available to download, has very responsive controls, and has a surprisingly great LCD panel (you expect moving to a screen with less than half the resolution and easily 1/2″ less diagonal size to be awful; it really isn’t).Most of all, Since Valve released their Steam Link APK and since Moonlight (for nVidia Gamestreaming) is a several-years-mature app, I’ve been having a blast playing games (with 1440p resolution on the host machine) from my PC all day today, when at home. Next step is experimenting with VPN’ing so that I can do the GRID-gaming that nVidia hosts, instead with my own machine at home, but that probably won’t be as pleasant. In short, the 2nd-gen refresh of the GPD XD+ overcomes the most glaring issues with the original product, the ecosystem is there, this hardware is formidable and more than enough for playing PUBG mobile (you *do* have to get creative with input schemes at times but even the vehicle-control with thumbstick totally worked!). Note that I bought this product and wasn’t given any review hardware or anything. I wanted to get the GPD Win but I’m too cheap and I knew I just wanted to stream my heavier games from a desktop anyways. In summary, EXCELLENT for Steam In-Home Streaming (AAAAND the new Steam Link app) or for nVidia GameSteam over Moonlight APK. Also good for most Emulators up to the fifth/sixth gen consoles. Migrating to a MediaTek SOC and doubling the ram/storage yields a snappy system with all-day battery life (I unplugged this at around 8am today and the battery was still at about 14% when I plugged it in after 8pm, using it heavily but sporadically throughout the day. 6000MaH is roughly 2x the battery capacity of a Samsung Galaxy S7 phone, for context).Only real complaints would be (a ) “suuuuper clicky shoulder buttons with non-analog “triggers” and “no camera and no Google Assistant support” which I can totally live with, and (b ) “It’s not a GPD Win” which you can tell by it being 2/3 as expensive (as 1st Gen Win), or 1/4 as expensive (as 2nd Gen Win).Edit: In the few weeks I’ve owned this thing, I’ve fallen in love with it. I now understand the keymapper button which allows you to bind touch controls to the physical buttons, thus making me far more formiddable in PUBG mobile. I’m loving the ability to pause any singleplayer title by closing the lid and resuming later, which means this device has been permanently *with* me for every long shopping outing, every line I’ve waited through, every slow phone call, and it’s even helped me out of a jam or two at work.Note: as device has no camera, many app’s will not want to download from play-store but if you stuff the APK’s in dropbox or other storage you can totally sideload them without issue into the GPD XD+ and this has been helpful for grabbing a few productivity apps (like Google Authenticator).I feel like I really consolidate a lot of my efforts with this device. It has no business playing PC games from my home desktop, over-the-internet, as well as it does.

    Glad I bought this

I’ve had this for almost a month now and have been playing it none stop. My only worry is the OS Android OS updates, this was the only thing stopping me from buying the 1st model. That’s why I gave this 4 stars. It works great with a 128gb Micro SD and the battery life is wonderful. haven’t charged it in 3 days and it’s still above 60%. This makes a good since the Win2 is so expensive. Steam Link works OK, the biggest issue for me was the lack of a guide button. Also the mini HDMI out has issues with 4K TV’s, I had to hooked mine up a 1080p to use it.

Works well, but much better for those willing to install Cleanrom

Very satisfied, more so after installing Cleanrom instead of the stock firmware the device ships with.Things I tested that worked well (on the GPD XD Plus):* The control pad and buttons compare favorably to a 3DS.* The screen is sharp and responsive.* The audio compares well with internal audio from any other handheld device, and supports stereo just fine.* HDMI output also works well, though my TV had some noticeable buffer delays at 1080p 60hz that might not be the device’s fault.* USB screen sharing works well, as tested with Vysor for both video and audio.I also tested Dolphin, Mupen64 Plus, Retroarch with several different cores, and a couple other software packages on the device without issue. The default installed versions were hacky and broken in some ways, however, so they’re worth reinstalling with or without a flash to Cleanrom. One big disclaimer: the default OS flashed onto the device lowers the device’s clockspeed and is broken in several meaningful ways. It also includes games that I’m pretty sure the device manufacturer does not have licenses for, so flashing the device is a good idea if you do not have legal licenses to these games. For these reasons and more, it’s worth the upgrade to Cleanrom, after which you can install whatever you’d like. I have minimal Android technical experience, but I found this process relatively easy and painless from GPD Central, which can be searched outside the scope of this review. After the Cleanrom installation, the few crashes in software that I experienced were resolved.Overall, strongly recommend if you, like me, were looking for a good portable device to play older games from your collection and to try playing randomizers for. Since the device also has wifi and can run its own web browser and application software, the device is perfect for playing new seeds on the go AND streaming them — which is exactly what I bought it for.

    Well worth it.

I really like this thing. I’ve never liked freemium games on the mobile platforms but i still like being able to play games anywhere. GPD is a very good alternative. The controls are very good, except for the small triggers (the inside buttons, R2 & L2 i think) are a bit tiny, some games that use them a lot can hurt after a bit. I think most of the complaints were with the first version of the GPD and it appears they fixed the spongy d-pad in this one. Overall i love it.I took one star off for the Operating System. This is essentially an android phone with an attached button pad which is very nice. But the bloatware that comes preinstalled is buggy, in english in spots and Korean (?) in other spots (some text boxes i can’t read), and it is EXTREMELY difficult to get around. I never did figure out how to put my own ROMs on the OS to get them to play because the documentation is non-existant. I tried to use some of the emulators but they are clearly freemium as well and want you to pay or post on twitter or some other really annoying strategy (exactly what i was trying to avoid). Additionally, the apps crash frequently and you can’t uninstall some apps (I just want this for the games, i don’t need facebook with a gamepad). There is an easy fix for this and it is beautiful: CleanROM is a replacement OS designed for this specific device (as well as others). There are very detailed instructions on how to get it on your device and they are specific for the GPD XD+. Everything from rooting the device to the software downloads is in one spot. It’s a bit lengthy, but very straightforward for even beginners and once that is done, everything works beautifully. I don’t miss the old operating system at all and things run much, much faster. I recommend installing RetroARCH from the Play store. It is a very slick emulator for many, many, many game consoles (including arcade and handhelds). Documentation on this is also very easy to follow. I’ve gotten it to work up to n46 (no emulator for gamecube. . .yet?) and the GPD handles it perfectly without any crashes.A few things could make this even better:Ditch the bloatware (not likely to happen but easy to fix)Larger internal storage (i keep an external micro SD plugged in at all times to fix this)More colors (Wish it was in the old red, but oh well)USB-c charger (I’d really like to get off micro USB, too many cables in my bag)
