DESIGN FLAWS – MIC won’t keep a connection!

HyperX Cloud Revolver S Gaming Headset with Dolby 7.1 Surround Sound. I wanted to like these headphones. I truly did. After all, there is a LOT to like (other than the $149.00 price tag). Otherwise, sturdy construction, extra-long, thick cord, nice large, cushy ear pads, large button controls on the cord for Dolby and mute along with side wheels for mic and volume control with a clip to hold in place. Nice features. It looks good. It sounds good. But after about a month of use, this is what I found. Microphone design flaws. MAJOR design flaws.1. Microphone Flaw 1: They tout this as a feature, that you can easily pull out the 1/4″ plug microphone and remove/replace as needed. Wait…why would I want to remove the mic? I believe these are marketed as gaming headphones, in which case, why would you want to remove the microphone again? Maybe flip it out of the way. Oh, wait. You can’t “flip” it out of the way – which brings me to design flaw #2.2. Microphone Flaw 2: Since the mic “plugs-in”, there is no swivel. Want a drink of water?Either remove the entire headset, or pull OUT the mic. (I did not opt for removing the mic, for I already saw the writing on the wall with this design). You can sort of move the mic to the side, it IS bendable, but awkward. VERY awkward.3. Microphone Flaw 3: GRAVITY! The mic is hanging down under the headset (of course) and plugs UP into the 1/4″ input. This is important, for gravity will only make this problem worse as time goes on. Guess what started happening? All of the sudden, the mic wasn’t as “snug” as it was (and this literally started happening shortly after about a month of use). The mic started losing connection. One minute my class could hear me, the next minute, no mic. The biggest problem was, I had no idea it was even loose. Didn’t appear loose. It would just stop working. There is no way to make the connection any tighter.4. Volume: I had read about this problem in the reviews and decided to overlook it. The volume control range is very narrow. The headset will not go as loud as other headsets. Now maybe this is great for your ears, but shouldn’t that decision be mine? Sometimes the mics of the people I am listening too are very low, in which case I need to increase the volume. Not going to happen with this headset. Seems to be a lot of scroll-wheel room with no real adjustment in volume.5. Oversight: The headset itself DOES adjust, but it seems to depend on your EARS to hold up the earpads and adjust the headset. There is no true setting or “click” to hold the headset in place. Again, GRAVITY will soon be an issue with this design flaw in the near future.6. Heavy Construction: Though comfortable at first, this headset IS heavy. After many hours (I need to spend a lot of time with a headset on, good, bad or indifferent – just the way it is) this headset DOES get heavy. From that perspective (which I did not think of in advance) is a drawback to the steel construction, no an asset. Nothing major, but it is noticeable after several hours.SUMMARY: Nice sound, nice construction, but the microphone losing connectivity makes this headset unreliable and completely unacceptable at this price point. In my opinion, they need to take this one back to the drawing board.

    Wow – love it!

I just returned SteelSeries’ top-of-the-line wired headset because it broke (literally stopped working) inside of 3 months and SS has deemed Amazon buyers to be unworthy of support. Yes, they voided the warranty because I purchased it here and told me I am stick with it! (Fortunately Amazon took it back, even thought it was well outside the return period).Prior to that I had an old Sound Blaster Recon wireless headset, which was pretty good, very flexible and had a lot of features, but the sound quality was so-so and after 4 years it was starting to have issues too…particularly the battery life.Enter the HyperX, which feels more solidly built than either of the previous two. Comfort may be a half-notch below the SS, but no biggie for me since I don’t games for hours on end. Sound quality is excellent however, and the mic is easily removable. A major bonus: Dolby decoding is done in HW in a little dongle that’s in-line with the wire. It has zero drivers to install, and thus no CPU load (SS did this all in SW and chewed up a lot of CPU cycles as a result). The dongle is very small and has a spring-loaded clip to attach to your shirt (or whatever) so it’s always at hand. The headset has NO LEDs (probably to conserve USB power for the HW decoding), but this is not only a non-issue for me, it’s actually a bonus. Blinking lights don’t have much appeal to me, and I’d rather have comfort, superb sound quality and solid construction, and this one checks ALL those boxes!

HyperX Cloud Revolver S = Huge disapointment

I hesitated buying the HyperX Cloud Revolver S because of the price and some bad online reviews but I took a chance. I was very disappointed when I received it. First was the very bad fit. I have a medium/large round head. The headset fit me way too loose. If I shook my head just a little, they would fall off. Very loose with absolutely no way to adjust. That right there was a deal breaker. Second was the horribly mic. I played a little Apex Legends and was told there was a lot of static. I verified on my PC that there was definitely static in the mic. A little muffled too. The sound of the speakers is okay at the very best. As an Audiophile I do understand that this is a gaming headset and not a good pair of headphones. I expected much better in sound quality though. Thanks to Amazons great return policy I quickly returned them to buy a good set of headphones. Now I just have to buy a mic and I will have the best of both and not have to settle for good enough performance.

The headset itself is fine, but the usb dongle is ABSOLUTE GARBAGE

I’ve been gaming for nearly 2 decades and have gone through well over 15 headsets. Recently picked up Overwatch, where positional audio matters more than almost anywhere else.At first I thought the headset was simply AWFUL. Even with every setting cranked up to 100% volume, it was maybe 1/3 of the volume of my ear buds. There was nearly no positional audio discernible. Then I realized that it was just because of the USB dongle. With or without the Dolby sound option on, it sounded horrible. I tried the headset plugged directly into my Creative sound card though, and it’s leaps and bounds better. Great clarity, good treble, positional audio is pretty decent, bass is decent. I’ll be keeping the headset, but the dongle is one of the biggest pieces of audio garbage I’ve ever encountered. Which, I guess, just puts it into the same tier as every other usb audio dongle.

Not for Xbox..if you need surround sound

I own an Xbox One S and have found this headset does not support surround sound. Because you plug this headset into the 3.5mm jack Xbox controller you can only get stereo sound. If you are playing games like Call of Duty Black Ops – Blackout, you will have a hard time telling where the sound is coming from (until it is too late). Please read another review if you have Playstation 4 to see how this works on that console.Cons — No Dolby 7.1 / 5.1 Surround Sound for Xbox. Stereo sound only- No mute button – The sound volume is much lower than the source. I need to turn my receiver up very loud when playing to have the game play volume be loud enough- The headset will adjust to different sizes, but cannot be locked into that position so it will slide down over my ears. Even with that they are comfortable and do not seem to get hot when wearing them for a long timePros — The headset seems to be well made and has good sound for music- The Microphone is flexible and can be removed for travel- Voice chat sound quality is good- They are comfortable and don’t feel hot when wearing them for long gaming sessions

Pros and Cons After 2 Years of Ownership

I have owned my HyperX Cloud Revolver S headset for a little more than two years now, and I would say that overall, it has done its job, and done it fairly well. But, there are a couple of things you should be aware of before purchasing this headset, and these things are why I rated this product 3 stars instead of 5 (so listen up HyperX!) I’ll make my impressions simple by writing a short “Pros Cons” list below.Pros• Aesthetics: The headset has an aesthetically pleasing design. It most definitely is not an ugly headset, that is for certain.• Construction: The materials have held up well over the two years I have owned them. The microphone works fine, unplugs and plugs in just a-ok. The cable connecting to the headset (the main one on the left earcup) is solid and doesn’t wiggle up and down, despite having to endure a fair amount of hard (mistakenly done) tugs from getting stuck on my chair’s elbow. The leatherette has held up extremely well, is still nice and stretchy, and isn’t showing any signs of age-related wear. Overall, everything still functions as it should, and is pretty much as it was out of the box.• Sound: Arguably one of the most important thing for a headset (well really, it is the most important thing) is sound quality. Sound quality can make or break a headset, no matter its comfort. So far, I have been extremely pleased with how this headsets sound, be it highs, lows, and bass. The sound quality is clear and crisp. And in gaming, you can definitely hear the small but important sounds, like footsteps.• Microphone: In terms of how good a headset mic can be in this price range, I’d say the microphone serves its purpose, and does it fairly well. It definitely works, and you can definitely be heard. While it isn’t the best, it’s still not shabby.Cons• Comfort: I have found this headset not as comfortable as the HyperX Cloud 2 headset I own. The earcups aren’t as large, which causes the plastic encasing of the speakers to touch my ears, causing mild discomfort; the weight of the headset causes the automatically-adjusting-headband(?) – the thing that rests on top of your head, to simply go all the way down on my head. Pretty much, the autoheadband just bottoms out on the metal band above it, causing the headset to sag, and requires me to repeatedly adjust the headphones again and again to stop the discomfort caused by the sagging.• Construction: “Wait, what? I thought you said the construction was good!” Overall, yes – but there is one thing that isn’t. The seam on the left earcup of my headset came apart, so I had to stitch it together (otherwise I’d have had to buy new earcups for $10.) Interestingly, for a headset more expensive than the Cloud 2 of mine, the seam isn’t stitched, but seems to be adhesived together. I’m not happy that HyperX cut corners there. And lastly, the USB that connects to your PC isn’t gold-plated, which is again, interesting, since the Cloud 2 headset I have has a gold-plated USB, yet this one is more expensive, and doesn’t.My experience with this headset has been neither great nor bad. While it is true that sound makes or breaks headphones, it’s vice versa with construction and comfort. Would I buy the headset again? No, I would not. I feel the Cons simply outweigh the Pros. However, I do recommend the HyperX Cloud 2, as my experience with those has been great (and that headset’s cheaper!)

    HyperX Cloud II’s Evolution?

I have owned the original HyperX Cloud, the HyperX Cloud II, and now the HyperX Cloud Revolver S, so my experience with this brand is decent to say the least, this covers 4 years and 3 products of ownership. The Original cloud was very comfortable and offered good stereo quality sound for an amazing price at the time, it lasted 1 1/2 years before the PU leather came off the headset and earmuffs, and was replaced withe the Cloud II. The Cloud II had “virtual 7.1” and it was decent, you could tell it was “fake 7.1” but it served its purpose and had very clear audio, and lasted 2 1/2 years before the control box started failing and would randomly disconnect based on positioning. To be entirely fair I beat the living crap out of that headset and it kept working so I have 0 issues with the Cloud II, and if you can get it at a good sale price I would still recommend that headset to anyone. On to the real reason you are here, the HyperX Cloud Revolver S. I have spend 6 hours with this headset and there are somethings I like and others I not so much. Coming from the highly acclaimed and award winning Cloud II’s I had the bar set pretty high for these so perhaps my review might be a bit jaded, take it worth a grain of salt.1. Automatic headset adjustment – yes, this does not have manually adjustable sizing features like many headsets do, this feels weird and loose when you first use it, but after some time you do get used to it, however the overall fit for my head is rather loose and not a tight as the Cloud II’s were, I do find this to be lacking behind in the Cloud II’s department and if HyperX is reading this, consider a HYBRID design where you get some level of manual adjustment with automatic control to ensure a perfect fit, this would completely alleviate this “issue”.2. Audio Control Setup – If you come from the HyperX Cloud/Cloud II and are used to a Windows Audio volume of 30 or so and crank the control up on the DAC (the little control box they give you), you WILL be in for a bad time, guaranteed! Note to HyperX, I am using the latest firmware. “Whats the deal here?”, if you use Windows audio setting of 30 and crank the DAC volume control up to max YOU WILL get “white noise”/static in the background and it is very prominent and it’s even WORSE with 7.1 Dolby enabled! This actaully almost drew me to consider returning this headset and getting the Steelseries Arctis Pro instead, but I decided to play with the settings some, and boy am I glad that I did.Audio Setting Configuration – Set Windows Audio to 100 (yes 100, at the very minimal set it to 80 but no lower), if you have Dobly Atmos this headset WILL work with it but it is not required, I noted no unfavorable conditions if using Dolby Atmos spatial sound. Next set your volume slider on the DAC (the little control box) to whatever you find comfortable, but keep that slider below 80% or you will start to get that background noise! If you follow my configuration above these headphones really start to shine, and the Dolby 7.1 enabled has an amazing sound stage, I was absolutely floored when playing Insurgency Sandstorm using the settings described above, true positional audio achieved! As for the feel of these headphones, they feel well constructed and sturdy but I do know that they have issues regarding their PU leather earmuffs, we shall see how long these last, I am expecting NO LESS than 1 year as the previous 2 have exceeded the 1 year mark with relative ease and extensive use.Again HyperX if you read this review please ensure that any future product you make includes proper 7.1 but ensure that the DAC issues mentioned here are resolved and if Windows does need some audio tuning that you apprise your clientele of this in a very forward and public manner to ensure people get the most out of your products.Overall I would give these a 4.5/5, I should give them a 4/5 due to the tweaking I had to figure out on my own, but I am a merciful reviewer :PThanks for taking the time to read this extensive review and I hope this has helped you understand what you are purchasing.

Finally an excellent “Gaming Headset” that is great for Driving Simulators

My search for the ultimate gaming headset/headphones had been one of the most grueling, extensive and expensive endeavors I’ve ever put myself through so far for my just over 40 plus years in this lifetime and to say it’s an easy task is not the case by a long shot! The list of headsets and headphones I currently own are the new Logitech G533, Razer Man O War Wireless 7.1, Lucidsound LS30 which I use with Razer Surround Pro, HyperX Cloud II, Turtle Beach Stealth 450, Steelseries Siberia 350, Sennheiser HD598cs and the cream of my crop Beyerdynamic DT 1770 which use the Tesla technology and are a phenomenal headphone to use for gaming but only with an amplifier which I’m currently using the Creative Soundblaster X7 Limited Edition which I’m not too sure if I’m going to upgrade the amp to something else yet or not and the jury is still out on that but anyways…I had pretty low expectations for the the HyperX Cloud Revolver S as I’ve gone through at minimum over 25 other Gaming Headsets and traditional Headphones over the last six months and I’ve been left very discouraged about ever finding a great “Gaming Headset” but I just have eaten my words as the Revolver S does put Dolby Headphone to good use and does indeed have the large Soundstage that gamers desire First Person Shooters and like myself a Racing and Driving Simulators which I’d say my ratio is 75% Driving Sim/20% FPS/5% Action/Adventure. They are very comfortable which at first feel really loose on the head but this is where they actually do very well once you get used to not having the clamping of the typical headsets out there. They are very light and only get slightly warm even after several hours of continuous use. The only thing I could say that is a drawback is they don’t get very loud but they suffice perfectly fine in my opinion. I would call this headset a definite buy through my seemingly endless search for the ultimate headset and I’ve attached some pictures for your viewing pleasure. Thanks for reading and any questions please don’t hesitate to ask and I’ll try to respond as quickly as possible.

An improvement over the last, but grab the one without the sound card

This headset is great. It’s just a good headset. It’s balance in overall quality of the hardware and the sound quality. It’s not going to blow your mind orgasmic sound from music or game, but it’s just enough to make The time spent using enjoyable.Muffs are largeand fit over the ears with ease, while also not putting a lot of pressure on your head. You will get hot after a while of wearing them, but that’s a typical headset from. The sound card in the wire is kind of useless in my opinion. Sure you get a kind of boomy sound when you listen to music or play game, but you’re sacrificing a lot of audio quality and making the pitch of everything go up. I typically keep it offso I kind of consider it a waste of money and not aspect regarding surround sound card.Overall it’s a huge improvement over the last hyperx, but it’s always your pain a premium for getting the hyperx name. It’s up to you to decide if it’s worth the money.

    Buy used, save money.

UPDATE: Still going strong after 2 months with no problems. Use your spatial sound settings cautiously can get extremely loud. Bass tickles your ears, playing KoTH in Arma 3 without the ear plugs in you feel the explosions on your ears, it’s epic as hell. The microphone is excellent, I play on an RP server and have zero issues communicating why I murdered 3 civilians and have cocaine on me, :D.Cons: The only con I found with this headset is the sound dongle clip is garbage, (I foresee it breaking soon, and I’ll use my warranty) the two volume/mic wheels have no resistance, I prefer to have a wheel that you can notch up one ring at a time and find your comfort zone. So if you move your body (where I keep it) and your leg turns up the volume, RIP you’re looking down to turn up or down the volume, you end up losing LOS on your target. Annoying as crap, will sell these once a new sound dongle comes out with these options.Dude… Blows my HyperX Cloud headset out the water. Bass is hits, it excels at explosions and gunfights in video games, music is meh (if you know settings and stuff it can be good) but I like it, audio is crisp and those footsteps tho. Comfy headset because we all love the memory foam, the microphone is on par with all others.Pro Tips: Check for used products on this headset, I ordered these for $122 w/ Free Shipping. Came in the box, plastics and manuals all still sealed and fresh. The Box was mangled AF, but the product was pristine. Just saying, save yourself $25 and get the 1 day shipping or just patiently wait. O/oDo you have feedback, your voice and background noise coming from the dongle being plugged in? Easy, hold the EQ Button on the side for 5 secs. Should fix it, if I had read this review would have saved me 4 hours of frustration. I hope I help at least 1 person. Their mic derps out or something, and needs a kick in the dongles to get it back on track. Happy Gaming my friends.
