Bringing the old to the Present

I love this thing! I own an original console but dragging out the real deal and setting it up on a modern screen can be a hassle especially if you want to save space or bring it over to a friend’s house. While it doesn’t feel like exactly the same as playing on an original, it does a good job of catching the general experience with the benefit of convenience. The emulation is fairly good. The sound isn’t exact but is decent enough to play and never is unpleasant. The input lag for me was negligible. Things I might have liked to see is better implementation of dithering/transparency to imitate CRTs, possibly different sound options to better imitate the audio between the different original Genesis models, and maybe (dreaming big here) a more open source approach to the game selection. It would be lovely to natively allow for game additions rather than taking the future hacking route. That being said, perfection is ideal but hard to achieve and the Sega Genesis Mini seems to get most of the experience right with some small but expected flaws. For now, the game selection is adequate and they have made a great emulation box for the casual setup that captures the general experience well. It comes well recommend for those who know what to expect.

Great selection of games, but poor controllers make some games almost unplayable

Although I preferred my Super Nintendo a whole lot more than my Sega Genesis back in the day, I went ahead and purchased the Genesis Mini, mainly due to nostalgia and the amount of included games it offered. While they did good at making the product look good on the outside, there are some notable issues with the controller that makes games virtually unplayable, and the sub-par graphics and gameplay (compared to Nintendo’s at the time) are still an issue for me. But I knew that going in. The low rating is mainly for the controller lag.My main issue with this console is the horrible controllers. They definitely don’t feel as well made as the original Genesis controller, with the button presses feeling loose and cheap. The main gripe I have is controller lag on most of the games. I noticed it the most on the games Alex Kidd, Castle of Illusion, Ghosts and Goblins, and Contra Hard Corps (which makes it unplayable due to the difficulty). I haven’t played all the games on it yet, but my initial playthrough of many of them left me pretty unhappy. I will say that Castlevania Bloodlines plays very well with the controller, so I have been racking my brain to try and remember if I had the same issue with the original Genesis playing these games. It could be the emulation not being the best, or it could be how the games themselves originally played. (Castle of Illusion definitely had “floaty” controls for Mickey Mouse in the original as well, but I don’t remember this much delay in inputs). I will say that I own a ton of original SNES games, but only around 6 Genesis games, because I wasn’t an original fan of it and only rented games for it. So, I can’t go back and replay many of these to check the difference and see if the originals had the delay issue. My second gripe is with the graphics and gameplay, which hasn’t changed since the 90s, so I guess you could say this is an accurate representation of the original Genesis. The Sega games always had poor graphics compared to Nintendo’s, and it is even more evident now, with the SNES Classic console out. I remember renting the exact same game for each console back in the day, and 9 times out of 10, the Super Nintendo’s version would blow away the Genesis in graphics and playability. There were notable exceptions though (Robocop vs Terminator, Flashback and Mortal Kombat for example). I do wish both the SNES Classic and Genesis Mini had one or two of the same games loaded on them to compare each other to, but that’s not the case. All I can say is that if you were an original fan of the Genesis over the Super Nintendo, or never played the games on the Super Nintendo, then this console will more than likely be acceptable to you. Especially since it includes games that were console exclusives that were not released on the SNES (with the exception of Earthworm Jim). But, compare the graphics of games like Castlevainia Bloodlines or Contra Hard Corps on the Genesis Mini, to Castlevainia 4 and Contra 3 on the SNES Classic, and you will see a dramatic difference in quality and effective controls. There are some things Sega did to make this Mini stand out from Nintendo’s offerings, though. The main feature would be the ability to return to the home screen and save game progress without the need to get up, go to the console, and hit the reset button like you have to do with the Nintendo Classic consoles. On the Genesis, you can just hold down the Start button on the controller for about 5 seconds, and a menu will pop up allowing you to save your game state, load a previous save, reset the game, or return to the main menu. That is a huge help compared to the other classic consoles! They also included a longer controller cord compared to Nintendo’s 3 foot cords. I believe the Genesis has a 6 foot cord on the controllers, so that is nice. Still, you will have to sit close to the console and tv, just like in the good ol’ days, unless you have a very long HDMI cord you can connect it with.If you are an original Genesis fan, this is a good console for you. I can’t compare it to the other recent and numerous Genesis consoles out there made by (I believe AtGames), but I have read numerous reviews saying the emulation on this is 100 times better and more accurate. There is a good selection of games, with several I never played on my original Genesis, so it is nice to try them out. I just wished they included some other Sega-only games like Splatterhouse 3.But, if you are deciding between the Genesis Mini and the Super NES Classic, the SNES wins every time in both quality, fun, and responsiveness of controls. You get more games on the Genesis, but if some are unplayable with the controllers that are included, and are just not that great to begin with, it defeats the purpose. This is only for hardcore Genesis fans, or those who are curious about what Sega was like back in the day.

    Blast from the past

I’ve never seen a better example of a company truly caring for a product to the point where they have the cartiage slot opennable. The games are great and the audio is beyond good. A big improve after the AtGames genesis. Get it if you love these old Sega gems.

    Fantastic Mini Sega

Don’t be fooled by the knock off versions of this that have been out for a couple of years. This is the Sega 30th anniversary authentic mini console. Works awesome, obviously there are wired controllers, I fixed this with a 25ft HDMI cable that allows for the console to be near the couch. I use the same cable for other mini consoles. The game selection is really good also. A lot of fun!!!

    Great classic mini console

Nice job all around by Sega. This is a well-designed and well thought out little device with a lot of fun packed inside. I see a few ludicrous reviews on here, where people forgot to take their pills or whatever and resort to saying this device “SUCKS” or is “GARBAGE”. Nothing could be further from the truth, and some people need to grow up.It was actually my cousin who was one of those “Sega kids”, but I still got to play the Genesis some back in the day and have fond memories of Sonic, Road Rash and several other great games. Hardware-wise the original Genesis was somewhat more generic in internal design than the SNES and had some real limitations if you know what to look for. But it was still a fertile platform for fun and classic game play. In bringing this classic mini console to market Sega has seemingly followed Nintendo’s lead in hardware design, having nearly identical internal specs and including power over micro USB, which will presumably be a vector for hacking this thing. That’s a good thing! Then Sega upped the ante and doubled the number of included games compared to Nintendo mini consoles, including alternate international versions of the ROMs that you can access just by changing the language settings. However this probably means there is less internal storage available for any future hacking of the device, but perhaps they will get USB support working.Overall the game selection is pretty good with a small handful of weaker entries and a few glaring omissions. For example, although they were able to include two Disney-licensed Mickey Mouse games, the second-highest selling Genesis game of all time, Disney’s Aladdin, is nowhere to be found. One would think it would have even made a great initial tie in with Disney promoting their recent re-hash of the film. Who knows, perhaps Sega tried. But still you won’t lack for fun and entertaining game play here. The two included 3-button controllers seem nice and solid, very much like the originals. But I haven’t used them. As a one-up on Nintendo this console did at least implement a way to get to the system menu using the controller by doing a long-press on the Start button. But an even better experience is with the officially licensed Retro-bit 6-button Sega game controllers. These give you the full 6 buttons you need for a couple of games, plus the Mode button on these gives you instantaneous access to the system/save menu from within games. Also the Retro-bit controllers have like a 12-14′ long cable I think, so that is an improvement over the just okay 6′ length of the included 3-button controllers. Well worth the modest additional cost. The user interface is simple but attractive, and has a funky new Sega-style synthesized music track. This will loop a few times and then the console will start going through demo mode of all 42 games. It’s almost fun to just leave it on and watch it cycle through demos. The save state feature is basically equivalent to that provided by the Nintendo mini consoles, offering 4 save slots per game, but the implementation is not quite as polished. I believe you have to start the game before you can access the save states, rather than jumping directly into a saved state. Also the Nintendo consoles will add a little “time played” indicator to each save state, to give you even some idea besides the mini screenshot of where the save state is within the game, you know when you return to it weeks or months later. And I don’t really see a way to manage save states, delete them, etc. Maybe I just missed it.Finally the emulation is done by M2, who are behind the emulation in virtual console and other ports of these classic games. Only one or two unofficial emulators come close to the same quality, so it’s not really going to get any better than that. I find reports of lag curious. I can’t detect any at all. Any form of emulation, including the Nintendo mini consoles, will have some minuscule amount however. At worst your TV may need some adjustment, but usually even that is not necessary. The games look, play, feel and sound right.Anyway, great job and congrats to Sega! This is a great item. As a bonafide Nintendo kid I’m happy to own this, and I hope Sega sells millions of them.

Definitely works better than the AT version but………

So here’s the deal. I bought this out of a large does of nostalgia. I’ve got several old sega cartridges and looking at the sega mini it appeared that you could actually play cartridges through this system (the picture of the console even shows the flaps that keep out the dust where cartridges are supposed to go). There’s even a person who answered a question regarding this console saying “sure you can play cartridges on this as long as the dimensions match….?” Fair warning, you can’t. The “slot” on this mini is purely decorative. No cartridges go there. You get a total of 42 games and, assuming you aren’t medium to moderately tech talented, that’s all you get. Plus side as follows.1. It is truly plug and play and it looks great on my 65″ big screen.2. Wired controllers that work and feel like the old sega controllers. They are the three button ones, but you won’t care as only street fighter is the only one that truly makes use of it (and being the game geek I am I bought a wireless six button to go with it, see below)3. Included HDMI cable.4. Easy menu’s, including english, japanese, spanish versions of the game (etc.) Plus switching to the aforementoned changes the game to the release title of that country, not just the actual spoken lang.5. A good collection of games, though big problem with the sega was a lot of their games were action titles or tied to big franchises, so don’t expect to see those but their are multiple lists of what is currently on the console, so even if some of those titles appeal to you it will be worth it.6. I purchased a wireless controller to go along with the console (the 8bitdio that Amazon also sells) and its way better than those klunky IR controllers that used to come with some of the minis, and that one is a six button.7. You can mod this console if you don’t mind trying to mess with the programming (there are tutorials on you tube, but I’m not that confident in my ability to do it properly, but if you are you can expand it yourself). So three stars, mainly because while it looks like almost true to life sega genesis, the lack of being able to “easily” mod or play cartridges off of it or use other genesis peripherals (and I say easy as in three steps of less with a difficulty level of “meh”)is a drawback I wish I had researched better. But it sounds good, and the games that are on there play well, no artifacting, no glitches so far on anything I’ve tried. Happy gaming.

    Games look and Play great!

First off the games look and play great ,i played the original games on original hardware, and these games are the same.the controller is three button and looks like the original controller but is usb plug in..The tiny console looks good but the headphone jack and volume knob are just for cosmetics.contoller has a decent length but if you buy the six or 8 button controller thier much longer.i dont know what case would fit this but i’ll buy one if i could find out what fits.what improvements could have been done ?1. make little cartridges that would fit in the opening port on the console that would add more games.the console would have to be made to accept some cartridges.2.make volume and headphone work. sell it for one hundred. and cartridges with ten games each for twenty.i highly recomend buying this so genesis might make more projects come to life in the future.

Not like you remember and not worth even $20

This is not a good system. The versions are not good and the interface is clunky. For example street fighter 2 – in order to kick or punch you have to toggle the start button as the controller has only three buttons so say playing as ryu if you want to kick you hit the start button and then hit a buttton and if you want to punch you have to then hit the start butting to switch to punches. I played for like one round and was done. A few other games are just as terrible. Avoid at all costs .

The Power of Blast Processing Returns

I was in the 7th grade when the original Genesis came out and it was a gift from the Videogaming gods. Near arcade quality graphics in an affordable home console was unheard of at that time. It came with “Altered Beast” and I also had just enough money saved to get “Super Thunder Blade” and I’m glad I did because as good as AB is, it gets boring fairly quick because it’s so short.Anyway, on to the new mini console – SEGA did a GREAT job with the new console – terrific build quality, the controllers are top notch and they got the legendary Japanese developer M2 to do the emulation. They really went all out on this console and it shows. Great selection of games and they look and sound great. I’ve read there are some issues with the sound being off in certain games but I didn’t notice that all. Buy without hesitation. SEGA!

Stands up to the Nintendo classic consoles. Surprising quality from modern day SEGA

I had very little hope for this console, as SEGA has lost a lot of credibility in recent years by farming out their IPs to dubious 3rd parties which have done nothing but tarnish SEGA’s reputation. I am happily surprised to say that this console is the first time in a long while that I have seen a genuinely good product from SEGA.The console itself feels of great quality and there is a lot of attention to detail here. I would dare say they even did a slightly better job than Nintendo did on their well respected NES and Super Nintendo classic consoles. Most importantly, the controllers are fantastic! Many complained that we only got the 3 button controllers, but I am so very satisfied with them. 90% of the Genesis library does not need a 6 button controller, and the 3 button controller is so much more comfortable. Props to SEGA for this choice. Not to mention, you can buy officially 6 button controllers for this console if you choose to.Now regarding the actual interface, it’s not bad. I would say that it’s not quite as polished as Nintendo’s offerings, but it is fully functional and pleasant to look at. I really like that when you switch the language to other countries, you get the ROM from that region. Very nice touch. My main complaint with this system is that the library is slightly lacking. I understand it would be difficult to curate a collection that would please everyone, but there are certainly some title choices that don’t make much sense to me. It would have been nice to see an option to expand the library, perhaps in line with what is available on the SEGA Genesis and Megadrive collection on Steam. As far as price, I feel that 80 dollars might be a bit too high, but only slightly. 60 dollars would have been a killer deal, but 70 is realistically fair. 80 is just on the hairy edge of questionable, given the lack of some great titles on the system and no official way to add more (yes, I am aware of unofficial methods to add games :P)And now, my biggest award to SEGA for this product. They made it available!!! Unlike Nintendo, they were able to produce a reasonable quantity of these systems and I had no trouble procuring one. No one had to fist fight each other over what is effectively a ROM box, and no filthy scalpers were able to prey on the general population. Good work SEGA.
