Excellent Wireless Headset Choice for both PS4 and Nintendo Switch

I’ve gone through exactly 3 headsets (The official Microsoft Xbox One headset, PlayStation Gold Wireless headset 2018, and a Razor headset) looking for a viable option that had both DECENT audio and mic quality, as all the headsets I’ve purchased have had build quality issues and terrible mic quality. I’ve given up on picking up a wireless headset as from what I’ve seen, are incredibly expensive. I saw the ad for the SteelSeries Arctic 1 headset and it seemed too good to be true (very cheap price for a wireless headset, and interchange between 3 consoles) and to my surprise, it lived up to pretty much all its claims. Wireless connectivity works seamlessly with its included dongle, and I have had zero dropouts or latency issues with it on both PS4 and Nintendo Switch. I originally purchased this headset primarily for the PS4, as I imagined wireless headsets were completely incompatible with the Nintendo Switch, but the headset does in-fact work effortlessly and all the buttons on the headset (Mic Mute On/Off, Volume Dial) work on both systems. Mic quality is excellent as well as audio quality, it’s perfectly balanced and not ridiculously skewed towards bass, and the volume can be raised very high on both consoles if you want. Battery life so far has also been great, it’s something I haven’t had to worry about when using and I only had to charge them once every week out of habit. The headset itself doesn’t feel flimsy and seems decently built, It’s pretty light and is surprisingly comfortable to wear, so much I use it also when I’m on my laptop. The only thing that slightly annoys me is that when I switch playing consoles and want to use the headset on it, I have to get up and unplug the headset dongle and connect it to the console I’m using (say, from the PS4 to the Nintendo Switch). This is pretty much a first world problem, but it’s something I’ve come across every once in a while.Overall I have to say I’m really loving this headset, if you were on the fence for this thing I really recommend you give it a try.UPDATE June 2020: It’s been 8 months since I’ve bought this headset, and I just wanted to report back that it has held up ROCK SOLID. This thing is by all means not flimsy, and the battery life has held up incredibly well. I’ve been gaming really long sessions, roughly 5-6 hours long each with friends online, and this thing just keeps going with no issues whatsoever. One of the few purchases I’ve made that I can say was absolutely worth it.

Solid audio and no connectivity issues (Tested with PS4 Pro)

The Arctis 1 Wireless is a great pair of wireless headphones. Audio quality is solid, clear and punchy. N.B. I have not tried the e.q. software customization but intend to do so.Build quality is good, the headset does not feel cheap even though construction is mostly plastic. Decent amount of adjustability and earcups swivel to lie flat around the neck or on a desk. Earcup padding is also decent and comfortable to wear for extended gameplay sessions.I haven’t tested compatibility with PC, Switch and Android devices, however, I intend to conduct testing and update this review in the future. So far, the product is highly recommended.UPDATE:I tested the Arctis 1 Wireless with the PS4 Pro, Switch and PC and it works great across these platforms. Migration is easy between systems, simple move the dongle to the desired device, power on and you’re golden. It is even more intuitive if you pair these with a low profile usb-c to usb-A adapter like these (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07T54754H/ref=ppx_od_dt_b_asin_title_s04?ie=UTF8&psc=1).Also tried out the eq adjustment software and it is fairly standard. You can adjust among a few preset configurations or make your own custom settings.Overall a great product and highly recommended. Best value for $99.99 with compatibility with Consoles/PCs/Android devices etc.

By far the best I’ve ever owned or tried

The short review: This is the most comfortable (*see Cons below), best sounding, best performing, headset I’ve ever owned or tested. I paid nearly twice what I paid for my nearest contender, the Logitech G933 Artemis Spectrum. Is the Arctis Pro + GameDAC twice as good as the G933s? No doubt about it. The G933s was very good all around, especially for the price, but the Arctis is outstanding in almost every way. Over the years I’ve owned or tried at least a half dozen gaming headsets. Some were good, some were good for the price and some were terrible. This headset is a textbook example of “you get what you pay for”.Pros:Sound – Sound quality is amazing! Very crisp and clear, decent bass without being muddy. Excellent “sound stage”, the direction of sounds is quite noticeable. DTS performs quite well in movies that are encoded with DTS. I like that I can turn DTS on and off with the press of a button. The game chat mixer function allows you to really dial in the balance between game audio and chat on the fly.Comfort – This is by far the most comfortable headset I’ve ever worn! The top strap puts nearly no noticeable pressure on your head. Both the top strap and ear pads are very breathable. I can game for hours without any pain or sweating. *See Cons below.Build Quality – It has a heavy and study feel to it and it really looks like it’s built to last.DAC – Intuitive menus and interface. Quick access to the most useful functions, volume, chat mix and DTS on/off.Cons:Comfort – There is a very limited range of adjust-ability for head size. This is done with a Velcro adjustment of the cloth head-strap length and that adjustment is very limited. In addition the metal frame of the head-strap is pretty stiff. I think if you have a bigger head this may not be the headset for you.Software – The software is not terrible, but the user interface is a bit clunky and unintuitive. As I understand it, it is necessary for DTS support.Overall I would say that if you have the budget for this headset, and don’t have a large-ish head, look no further.

Cheap materials. Warranty is a joke. Don’t try SquareTrade either. So many don’ts.

My husband had a pair of Sennheisers for 7 years. Loved them. Only replaced them because the vinyl on the earpieces was getting pretty gross. They were awesome – I still use them… Well I did until these ArcitsPros went tees-up and no one will stand behind them.I bought him these for Valentine’s Day because I’m just that awesome (and we blow so much on our kids for x-mas that I can’t afford a good gift for him until V-Day anyway). I have to admit, I’m a cheapskate and these were really expensive at the time, so I saved about $35 by purchasing the “Used: Like New” versions from Amazon. I did not see any glaring info about how you aren’t covered by the manufacturer’s warranty. But in the not-so-cheepskate move, I purchased a 4-year SquareTrade policy to go with it. I figured 4 years was good, but of course I was judging them by the Sennheisers bought 7 years earlier and going strong for way less money… When they arrived, apart from the Amazon sticker over the edge of the box, you could not tell these had ever been opened. Just looked like a buyer’s remorse return. So he got these around February 6th and raved about the sound – “the Game DAC was totally worth it”, “Can’t believe how great these are”, etc. I thought I had an epic win in the books. No weird mishaps, no drops, no nerd-rage throws, nothing. Daily use from desk to head to desk. Happy as a clam for almost 5 months. MONTHS, mind you. Around July 8 (we were away for a family trip for a week), hubs noticed the left earpiece was feeling a little loose and clunky. Then by the end of that week, it snapped. A chunk of plastic flew out and the “hinge” was exposed. I use that term loosely, because these substantial headsets are held together with a thin ring of metal in PLASTIC. Shocked, gutted, cheesed off to say the least. How did I spend a quarter-G on some friggin’ headphones that nominally lasted 5 months.I thought, “Whew! Glad I got that SquareTrade!” My experience with them had been top-notch in the past. I logged on to make a claim with SquareTrade: an Allstate Company (first red flag – these people do not like to pay). They send back an email – contact the manufacturer. Contacted SteelSeries, gave all the info, sent the pictures, yadda yadda. “We’re sorry, there’s no warranty because you bought them Used on Amazon”. WHAT?? Go back to SquareTrade, send them the denial, they send back an email saying to call them. After a half an hour with them on the phone, answering multiple times that they weren’t involved in an accident, they come back and say that they can’t cover them, only “mechanical and electrical failures” (What is this if not mechanical??). I know that insurance companies get sued for “auto-denying” claims, so I asked for the supervisor that told him to deny the claim. When she came on the phone, I asked her what further information she needed from me to process the claim and she offered a mail-in repair. So now I guess we wait. I don’t have high hopes, but maybe they will be able to swap out the headsets. It’s obviously the cheap part of the deal because the Game DAC works great. If they continue to fail, I’ll go back to Amazon and see if they’re willing to back their sale. The moral of the story? Go German, or not at all. If anyone actually decides to stand up for this product, I’ll come back and post an update. This is one chica not holding her breath. Seriously, while I’m waiting for the next round of BS, I’m going to go shop for Sennheisers.UPDATE – SquareTrade will not cover the mechanical defect that caused the issue. One last shot with Amazon.UPDATE 2 – Amazon saved the day, but trust me, spare yourself the frustration and pass on this piece of crap.

  5. SteelSeries

    Excellent, but pricey

I guess I’ll be the first to write a review for these. I’ve been using Steelseries products forever now and find them really good. In terms of headsets, I also own the a40 tr, a50 gen3, a50 gen2, and I temporarily owned the PlayStation platinum, Razer Man o War, and steelseries arctis 5.In terms of packaging, it’s quite good. Simple, but everything is packed together nicely and you can tell Steelseries didn’t put a lot of money toward the packaging, they kept that for the headset itself.Once you get the Arctis pro out of the box, you can immediately tell it’s built to last. Strong, but lightweight aluminum arms now hold the cans to the steel headband. They use the same exact ski goggle style headband the arctis 7 used. They come with the GameDAC, and the necessary cables. On initial impression, the headset is much heavier than the arctis 5. Obviously, the more premium materials are to blame for that. However, they are now using deeper, thicker ear pads on the cups. This makes it even more comfortable than the arctis 5 to wear for long periods of time. However, I didn’t think they were as comfortable as the a50 or a40 tr. First thing I did was download Steelseries engine latest version and..no support. My arctis pro isn’t detected in the software which is really disappointing. Don’t know if it is a problem with my particular headset or Steelseries isn’t supporting it quite yet in the software. Luckily, you can customize everything from sound, EQ, inputs, outputs, rgb lighting right from the Game DAC itself. After adjusting everything and turning on the hi res mode and going into tidal I was..slightly disappointed. The flat EQ is pretty boring and I didn’t find them that spectacular. However, if you make your own custom EQ or even just throw the bass boost EQ on, these roar to life. I must say, the sound stage isn’t anything special for a closed can. However, the imaging and accuracy of the sound was really nice. They have much more clarity in the upper and lower mids compared the the a40tr. One negative is volume. These don’t get very loud at all, Steelseries says there is something in the audio setting that needs to be turned from low to high, couldn’t find it at all. So, if you like to absolutely crank your music or games, you may be slightly disappointed. They get loud enough for sure, but they won’t hurt your ears or anything if you want them to. Slightly disappointing for something that is supposed to have an amp driving it. A40tr can get MUCH louder. In terms of gameplay, they sound really good. These are using dts headphone x 7.1 v2. V2 has much better definition of audio and takes away some of the “tunnel” effect of V1. I think they sound really comparable to the a40 tr in terms of actual surround sound. Again, sound quality on the arctis pro is better than the a40tr. It is also built much better and feels more premium. Obvious downside of these is price, there are a lot of options at the 250 price point. However, I think these are one of, if not some of the better gaming focused headphones you can get for 250. If you are deciding between this and a40 the, it’s an easy choice in my opinion. These are better.P.S. These also fully work on the PlayStation 4 with chat mix compatibility and surround sound compatibility. Yakuza 0 sounded better than ever. The mic quality is also really good. Much better than the a40/a50. It also comes with a windscreen to help with some puffs and wind. So if you have 250 to spend on a gaming headset that works with pc, ps4. Get these. They are really good. Good job Steelseries. You tore me away from my beloved a40tr.

It’s a good headset but too expensive

I really wanted to like this headset. I’ve had many, from Corsair Voids to Razer Man O’ Wars to custom planar magnetics with mics attached. I want to say that this headset is easily upper class as far as mass-manufactured headsets go, but it’s still a mass-manufactured headset. If you want something easy and plug-and-play and the cost doesn’t dissuade you, then this is a pretty good option. If the price does dissuade you, then there are better options to be had. This is wireless, and that’s a good thing, but it does present a bit of background hiss that is apparent on quieter music (e.g. classical, some jazz). It’s not distracting, but it’s always there, and moving from this headset to wired headphones does make it obvious that there’s additional noise involved in being wireless. For gaming, this is a complete non-issue. They do support direct wired connection, so that option is still there if you have a good (male-male 1/8″) cable to hook up with.As a critical listening can, this does a lot better than I expected. It’s head and shoulders above the competition like the Void and Razer sets, and it’s more comfortable than either as well. The replaceable battery system seems like more of an annoyance than anything, but I’m sure the first time I forget to charge it and have an expensive wired headset while it charges, I’ll change my tune on that. The control box is nice, looks good, and is easy to use. It is still an additional dongle to find a spot for on your desk, though. The bass level on these is good but not great (B+), the amount of detail is surprisingly good for a mass-market headset (B), and treble is present but not overbearing. Overall a good gaming configuration, and even passable for primary critical listening when hooked up with a cable.Overall I’d be more than happy to make these my everyday gaming cans if they were cheaper. But at the price, there’s no reason to get these over a $200 wired headset like the Sennheiser HD6xx or the AKG K7xx. Those two will easily outshine the Arctis Pro when hooked up to a decent DAC/amp combo, and still cost the same or less. But those are still wired options, and if you simply can’t live with a wire, then these will do I guess.I can’t say for sure but if the wired, non-Pro edition of these is the same exact headset, then those might be an excellent bargain for gaming headphones.

Very comfortable, great mic, good sound. Low volume, sub-par directional sound.

I got these for half price so I’m not complaining much. This is a good headset, no doubt. Very comfortable, clear sound, great mic. But two things kept me from giving a 5-star rating. First – Volume isn’t loud enough. Second – The directional sound isn’t good enough for MMO games like PUBG. Left/Right is ok, front/back is not good. IF you’re only looking for good easy listening quality and comfort with an above average microphone, this is the headset for you. But if you want a quality MMO gaming headset, look elsewhere.

Okay, what? How did I not ever hear of these before today?

I’ve been using astro A40’s since their inception. Not because I was a fan boy or anything, I just genuinely appreciate the “best” experience. I’ve used bluetooth wireless headphones before and I loved being untethered but the latency makes for a poor gaming experience which is why I used Astro A40’s and didn’t think the upgrade to the A50’s would be worth it since they were basically the exact same headset. Well after about 6-7 years my Astro 40’s microphone broke and the headstrap broke so it was time to upgrade… It was between a pair of Astro A50’s and this Steel series…This completely blows me out of the water. Not only does it deliver superior audio than the Astro A40’s in my opinion, but it pulls off being wireless flawlessly. There is no perceptible latency. Just in every category these are amazing. I love the low profile look to them. They don’t scream gamer (that being said, I wish I noticed these come in black before I ordered). It was literally ONE mini USB cable to set up. It paired instantly out of the box with both the internal battery plus spare battery already charged to at least 90% out of the box.Seriously, I just plugged in the included (i think it’s called a DAC box?) and it connected my headphones right away and I was already all set to go. If you want the full experience and dynamic 7.1 surround though you do need to download steel series engine which takes 2 minutes (not kidding, its very fast). The software instantly recognized the headphones and downloaded the latest drivers in 10 seconds. Then you just check the box for 7.1 surround and you’re all done. For gameplay I tested these in Overwatch. I had no idea what I was missing, and seriously this is in comparison to Astro A40’s (granted it was the like 2013 versions but still, they had 7.1 surround sound on them even then). I can hear everything so much more clearly and at the added benefit of this things amazing connectivity features. Being able to clearly see my microphone muted, be able to put the microphone away instead of just flipped up (which incidentally the microphone still works while its pushed in and people CAN still hear you if you prefer the more stealth look of the microphone put away). Oh my gosh and the feature to have your phone connected AT THE SAME TIME is amazing. You can be working on your computer, watching videos etc and seemlessly take a phone call and walk away without having to unplug anything…Just wow. These are hands down the best wireless gaming headphones on the market. Period. Like I’ve been waiting for the next generational leap before upgrading and this was definitely it. You can’t get this performance and feature set on a budget guys. If this is what you’re looking for and you got the money, do it!My only CON is that I think they are too tight on the head but are otherwise very comfortable but it’s not unbearably tight, just too tight for my taste. I may look for solutions to stretch it. Also maybe the cloth adjustment strap is a hair too short? But these are small nitpicks.Seriously… I’ll stop here because I’ll literally type a novel about how good these are. I’ll never buy Astro’s again, they have definitively dethroned in my eyes for the number 1 gaming head set. I don’t wanna bad mouth Astro’s, they are a great headset but they are in 2nd place now for sure. Catch up Astro, I’ll look you up in 5-6 years if there is ever a reason to upgrade from this!

    Let’s Talk About The Headband…

Disclaimer: It’s hard to say how my head compares to other peoples heads because I haven’t measured other peoples heads, but I’m fairly confident that I have a larger than average head.Ironically, the product praises that “The exclusive Skin goggle suspension headband perfectly contours across your entire head, comfortably distributing the Weight and eliminating pressure points” which is basically saying it’s quite comfortable. If you have the same head as me, then initially you have the headband “comfortably” “distributing” the Weight right above the ears, across to the temples, which when I mean “comfortably” and “distributing”, I mean that the pressure/weight is completely and nauseatingly all there. I’m not sure why the pressure makes me feel mild nausea, but that’s quite literally the opposite of what the headband thing is supposed to do.After a while of adjusting the headband, I have relieved the pressure from that area, but on the other hand, they feel a bit uneven, loose and uncomfortable for long use. So, how the headband works is that instead of that traditional shift and snap system that headphones tend to do, they basically put velcro on the ends an elastic band which is both your cushion and your way to adjust the headphones to your head. You tighten or loosen the headphones through the velcro, and there isn’t a good way to fine tune how much you want or whether or not it’s even, since it’s just a dark cloth with no indications/suggestions on the part where the velcro should connect with the band. You’ve probably seen and know velcro, perhaps through shoes or those velcro braclets. Imagine that you have the velcro strap of a shoe, but you have to adjust by millimeters on the felt that the velcro connects to, which is about an inch and you can’t actually see it because in order to fine tune them, you have to wear them, and in order to see how you did, you have to take it off.Unfortunately, you will need a very long amount of fine tuning in order for this to fit perfectly, and as of right now of 30 minutes of fiddling, mine still feels a bit off, but for those whose heads/ears don’t fit traditional headphones, this could work for them. Personally, if you feel like you need to adjust your headphones to extremely fine details, but without the desire to have an accurate way to do so this is probably okay for you, but if you’re someone who is fine with traditional headphone shift and snap, I would pass on this.

    Disappointing!

I did so much research coming to the final decision in buying this headset. So many videos made about it, praising it, etc. I took the bad reviews in stride and perhaps, these were just one offs. So, I went and bought this for myself. I was so excited and I couldn’t wait to try them on! They arrived this afternoon and I was just on my way out when the delivery lady handed this to me. Anyway, I went through the motion of setting it up. It was pretty easy. Cables here and there, a few settings on the PS4 and I was live!As soon as I heard the first sounds through the headphones, I thought, “YOU MUST BE KIDDING ME!!!!”And no, those were not words of disbelief due to an overwhelming positive experience. Those were words from utter disgust and disappointment! For a $200+ headset, this was WAAAAAY overpriced! How can I put this lightly. Well, my cellphone earbuds sounded much better! These headphones were lacking in bass, even if you crank it up on the included amplifier control box. The sound quality was awful! I bet a tin can on strings sound much better than this!I tweaked more settings but nothing helped. So, I decided to return them.Folks, if you are looking for really good quality gaming headsets that you can also use for watching movies, look elsewhere! Get the Playstation Gold or Platinum headsets instead!
