Definitely feels like a budget keyboard

I went into this purchase thinking, “A keyboard is a keyboard. How could you possibly mess it up?”, so I went for a budget keyboard. I also wanted it backlit so I could see the keys in dark environments.Turns out (you can see this in the pictures) that the backlight doesn’t actually light up what the key is, it only lights up the area around it. So, I try using this keyboard at night and find that I still can’t see which keys I’m pressing. All they needed to do was make the letters on the keys semi-transparent.Also, the enter key is weirdly shaped from your average keyboard, so I keep on missing the enter key and hitting \ instead. That took some getting used to.I like the feel of the keys well enough. It sometimes isn’t clear whether it actually registered a key stroke or not, since the point where it actually registers the keystroke is not well defined.A bunch of people have said that you toggle the light on or off with scroll lock or other keys. I don’t understand this. Look at the keyboard to the right of the spacebar. There’s a key with a lightbulb on it. For me at least, that key turns the backlight on and off. Also, I really appreciate that they have an on/off switch for that; It annoys me when I get LED stuff that cannot be turned off.

    Nice keyboard.

I purchased this keyboard for the specific purpose of using it on my HTPC/Gaming rig.It works well with SteamOS right out of the box and makes working in desktop mode very easy (desktop mode is necessary for multimedia until Steam decides to include media apps inside of Steam). They keyboard is lite, but if feels sturdy, the keys are rubber and they have a definite click when pressed. The cover also has a rubberized coating. The keys are laid out nicely and all keys are easily accessible for thumb tapping. The trackpad feels a little tacky at first (ie sticky), but you get used to it after a while.Been using it fairly heavily for the last 4 days and haven’t had to recharge it yet…OK the downsides:1) It’s not backlit. If you need a lot of keyboard functions, and you like to sit in the dark it will be impossible to navigate, unless you can touchtype.2) The connection light. In the same darkness situation the connection light can be VERY obtrusive.3) The manual. While the English is fine, it is highly lacking.Overall: A very nice keyboard if you can deal without blacklit keys. It’s much more comfortable for extended usage than those brick style keyboards, this is rounded and contoured almost like a video game controller.I will likely go with another one of these for my upcoming Raspberry Pi project.

    Good, but w/ issues.

12 Jan 2016 UPDATESo decided to update my HTPC from an Android box to a Windows HTPC. I wanted to see if this Rii would keep repeating characters. it sucks when the volume gets repeated and all of a sudden it’s at a super high volume. i’m down grading this from 3 stars to 2. I don’t really like it now where this problem seems to be on different platforms. i would find something a lot better without the character repeats and with a back light on it.I bought this device on July 6, 2015. It works well, and the feel of the device is fairly solid. I like the charging cord that came with the unit. I’m using it specifically for Vilso Ti4 Android box and it seems to have some odd issues. Battery life last awhile and I like it because of the small compact size.1. The odd issue is basically when scrolling left/right or up/down sometimes the last key that was pressed would continue without stopping. So if the letter “k” is the last character in a word I’m typing in to do a search for a movie/tv, sometimes the output is “kkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk”. I haven’t tried this device on a Windows device since I just thought about it, but I suspect it does the same.

Good for people with big fingers

Decent keyboard. It’s light. The keys resemble those old black Dell keyboards. The keys are big and kind of have a mechanical feel to them (this isn’t a mechanical keyboard, obviously). Good for people with big fingers, definitely. The key letters or finish aren’t transparent, so the light shines around the keys rather than through them. For Windows users, there’s a backlight key on the right side in between the Ctrl and FN/Alt key. For Mac users, the backlight key is Scroll Lock. The only gripe I had, which is a minor gripe, is that the keyboard wasn’t recognized by a brand new motherboard; so I had to use a different one to set up a new rig. If you’re getting this keyboard for a new build, be aware that you might not be able to use the keybaord until you install the motherboard software and update the USB drivers. The keyboard comes with no software or drivers. Just to be safe, have a second keyboard on hand to set up your computer and download the necessary software.

    Not as expected

First, understand that I am happy with Rii products thus far. I also have a mini bluetooth keyboard for my smart TV. I was looking for a full-size keyboard that would provide a light show similar to my laptop keyboard, with functions such as shifting/fading colors, “splash” effect with keystrokes and the like. I fell short on my responsibility to read the description thoroughly. This keyboard is only backlit, meaning the colors are stationary and no effects. It is an older fashioned mechanical keyboard so you must exert more force for the keystroke to register on your computer. Also the keyboard layout is clunky compared to a standard 101-key layout. The mouse performs the color shift/fade beautifully. I wish they incorporated that part of the technology into the keyboard. i am going to give this one away as a gift and shop another brand to get what I wanted, and “yes” I will be reading the whole description in the future. I cannot attest to gaming performance as I downgraded to console games, years ago.

Perfect companion for computer/laptop/tablets but not much helpful for smart-TVs

I already have a wireless mouse/keyboard for my computer, so my primary intention of purchasing Rii keyboard was to connect with my Samsung Smart TV. This device is perfect for computer/tablet and while it connects to Smart TV, it is not as useful on TVs.I am giving 5 star review because the problem I am describing below are not caused by the Rii device, but they’re limitation of the various apps on smart-TV. Secondly, this product does not make claim that it’d be functional on smart-TVs. But I hope this review helps those who might be considering the purchase of this keyboard for smart-TV.PROS:* Light weight* Pressing keys feels firm* Mouse pad is highly responsive* Works as advertised for computer/laptop/tablets (Win7, Win8/8.1 laptop & tablets)* Has all keys I need* Superfast shipping .. Purchased it on Tuesday, was shipped on Thursday and arrived by Friday* Package has the keyboard, charging cable, and mount .. still need to figure out how to use mountCONS:* DOES NOT WORK as expected with latest Samsung Smart TVs (TV purchased in Nov 2014)* TV recognizes the keyboard and mouse. But almost no apps recognize external keyboards — so Pandora/Youtube/Netflix apps still force you to use their on-screen keyboard. This is NOT a problem of the TV or the Rii keyboard. But how the apps were written for smart TVs.* When connecting keyboard with smart tv’s, you can use navigational keys (Up/down/left/right/enter) on Rii keyboard* When connecting keyboard with smart tv’s, you can use also use number pad to enter channel number. But again, you’re limited to main-channel numbers, and cannot enter “sub-channel numbers”. E.g. I can press [11] + [Enter] and TV will default to “11-1” channel. But I cannot go to “11-3” channel through keyboard. I must first go to [11-1] channel, and then use TV remote to go to 11-3.* Works with web-browser app on TV* On Samsung TV, the USB connector is in the back. So sometimes the keyboard takes 2-3 seconds to connect. It blinks yellow light until it connects.* Would’ve been great if there were instructions on using mount

You get what you pay for

It’s definitely an okay keyboard for the price. I’ve had this keyboard for little over a year, and I have been noticing a few issues.1. The black imaging on the keys is wearing off several of the keys. Specifically my ‘F’ and ‘C’ keys.2. Using the number pad (mostly) and a few of the letter keys don’t respond when I click on them quickly. They just don’t register. And this is very frustrating when I need them for hotkeys.3. I had thought keyboard had the ability to customize the coloring, but no. It’s the rainbow lighting that I’m not a fan of. But this is more of a preference than an issue.Keep in mind I have not heavily used this keyboard either, so I’m disappointed in longevity of the keyboard.

Good keyboard but must use included extension cable to keep USB reciever away from HTPC and TV

Works great for my home theater PC (Dell Zino 410 w/Windows 7 Home Edition) that is 10 feet away from where I sit in a direct line of sight. Only trick is that the USB receiver dongle must be separated from the HTPC and TV using the included power/extension cable. The instructions actually say that you may have to do this due to electronic interference from other devices. When I first installed the USB receiver straight into the HTPC front USB port, the keyboard was very sporadic, sometimes working okay, sometimes disconnecting frequently. Using the extension to get the USB receiver away from both the HTPC and TV solved the issue. Of course, now I have a black cable clearly visible leading away from the HTPC. The old full-size wireless keyboard I previously used did not have this problem. The keyboard itself is nice. Very compact and lightweight. So much easier to handle than the old full-size wireless keyboard. Keys have a good feel. It took a couple of hours for the initial charge-up.I would have given this 5 stars if it had worked with the USB receiver plugged straight into the HTPC.

All the essentials in a tiny package and fair price!

Just bought this. pros- seems sturdy made but light as a feather. functions nicely. really like the extra function keys for things like internet or start menu, etc. mousepad works sufficient and left and right clickers work. decent layout. it is actually even smaller than i imagined it, which is great because i bought it for my 7″ Winbook tablet from microcenter. You’re probably not going to be as fast on it as a regular keyboard but I do find it easier than using the on-screen keyboard on my tiny windows tablet. The mousepad/touchpad really helps for precision too, which on a tiny but full version of windows 8 is essential because microsoft didn’t scale the OS for tablet usage. Icons on the desktop are tiny tiny and despite having a decent touchscreen on the tablet, I had a hard time with accurate pushing of icons and typing in windows 8 on it. Not a fault of the tablet, just a small drawback of the windows 08. So this little keyboard will help fill in for those needs nicely. I’ve only had it a day, it paired with the dongle easily, but I can’t comment on longevity. So far my own drawbacks on it are this: documentation doesn’t explain a lot. It would have been nice to see information explained the 3 ended charging cord and various buttons/functions on the device, like how to make the ‘scroll wheel’ work on the mousepad/touchpad. And what is the extra blue function on the spacebar? Maybe these are obvious, but to me they were not. The other thing I haven’t figured out and am disappointed in if it’s not capable is the advertisement says it’s wireless 2.4 or bluetooth. I was hoping to be able to pair it via bluetooth to my device without using a dongle in the USB port since I only have 1 USB port, but I can’t find a way to do that other than using the USB dongle so I feel misled by that. If they fixed these, I’d give it 5 stars. Would really love if it was backlit too, but for the price you really can’t go wrong here!

Fantastic controller! No brainer for $17!

I have a friend who has one of these and I decided to get it because I thought it was cool, and quite useful. I was not let down. This is one of the best wireless controllers for anything possible. I don’t care too much for the “boxy” wireless keyboard, and I use it to watch a movie and control my PC. Below is a pro and con list.Pro:- Looks great- Has every key imaginable, and is still able to do hotkeys (which I frequently use). I was concerned that you could only press one at a time, but both my friends and my own work great for hotkeys consisting of 2-4 key pressings.- Fantastic price ($17 are you kidding me).- Controller type feel. It isn’t “boxy” or awkward when it is resting on your lap to use it. It feels like a game controller and my hand naturally falls into place on it. Very easy to use.Cons:- Battery life isn’t super long, turn it off while you watch a movie or are not doing something for a bit of time. If you do that, there is no problem.- When you charge it, there is no indication of what percentage you have left in the batter. Even if they included a CD or some type of software that could be displayed when you pressed a button that would be nice. But it only has a red LED when charging, and is turned off when fully charged and plugged in. This isn’t a major issue but perhaps Rii could read this and implement a program to read the battery life. The verdict:No brainer. Absolute fantastic deal. If you need a wireless controller for any reason (except for heavy gaming) you should buy this immediately. I am very happy with this and would definitely buy another one should I ever need it. Very pleased!
