Good game but full of bugs

I’ve been looking for this kind of game for almost a decade. I used to play Cabelas’ Big Game Hunter 2005 and it was fantastic.Hunting – this unique genre has been a bit crappy recently, due to lots of arcade/casual aka “rambo run and gun superman” kind of games. They really ruin the genre so badly. Thank God theHunter CotW came out. I was so happy to know the game packs lots of features and most importantly, requires strategies. I’ve seen some people complain about walking for hours without action. Well, if you want countless action go play Monster Hunter or Horizon. This game is a HUNTING SIMULATOR, which you have to use YOUR BRAIN and strategies to succeed. What do you do when you go hunting in real life? You run like a horse for miles expecting deer to show up in front of you? Nah, it’s not how it works. I understand how the glitches annoy you, but complaining about no action? That’s stupid.**Update June 2019After the update today, I lost all my progress (40+ missions, 50hours of gameplay) and had to start the missions over. Googled the bug and seems like many other people had the same problem. Thank you developers for this glitchy game.

A gal that loves this game

Absolutely the most addicting game. Very realistic outdoor maps- maybe ‘too’ realistic for me sometimes. I’m not a die-hard video gamer, just someone that isn’t much for watching tv- and always has to have a PS console from the ‘1’ on… I had absolutely no idea what I was doing when I started out- so I visited many lookout points and Outposts without realizing that I was supposed to ‘claim’ them. I spent much of the first few hours riding around trails and just checking out things. I’ll be honest I’m not an actual hunter- though I’ve been around it all of my life. I don’t like traipsing around in cold weather, hiking, or dealing with wild animals particularly. That being said.. once I figured out the basics and sort of got the gist of it all- I have discovered the entire Layton Lakes map, and a portion of the European one. Still don’t like running into bears – after having one charge and ‘run over me’ when I wounded it.. but with obtaining the .270 finally it is not quite as nerve wracking. Unlike some of the neat Youtube vid’s- I do buy/build quite a few of the Hunting structures around the map. If there are a lot of tracks around it and animals are calling – usually it pays for the cost of it if I can just get a few deer and a maybe a moose while I’m up there. The night time hunting isn’t my favorite, really hard for me to spot animals when I hear them trotting around- so I often times ‘Rest’ at an outpost and bypass right to morning, for a small fee. Some of the previous hunting games that I’ve played, you have to go in and ‘buy’ a license, provisions, then hit the correct species or get thrown out of the game- This game you just get your gun and some ammo and ‘Hunt’. I’m saving up for the larger gun that I can shoot from 2-300 yards out, and maybe some day I’ll try the bow. I’m not sure what’s up with my coyote caller (jackrabbit).. it seems to want to glitch and get stuck into a loop- so I finally just removed it from my backpack. I use the standard deer caller and it works fairly well on a lot of animals. Haven’t tried the scent covers yet. It has skill points and perk points you can use as you get a little better- anything to help my aim is a good thing. You will probably get to be a very good tracker if you try to shoot larger animals with your beginner .243 rifle. I just like to walk away from the Outpost and listen for calls- and then go into the ‘creep’ walk mode – until you spot it. My favorite areas to hunt are Roonochee and Willipeg- Once you shoot a few animals the area turns to a purple ‘pressure’ zone and the animals will thin out quite quickly- so it’s nice to be able to fast travel to another Outpost. I would love it if you could fast travel to the Lookout points as well. Have never dealt with ‘waypoints’ before but I’m a pro with them now. For someone with no sense of direction, they are the only way I can move about these maps. I don’t really know what they could do to make this more entertaining- maybe make the weapons a little easier to obtain.. (maybe no bears).. I haven’t really played a fun shooting game since ‘Gun’ on PS2. So very rusty, but it comes back. I had to get some gaming headphones so I can hear the sound effects better- and not have to crank it up and make my neighbors wonder why they hear loud’ish ‘gun-fire’ for a couple of hours- my cat appreciated it too.. Kind of funny when I come into work and someone asks how my evening was. I’m like ‘good, got a diamond elk last nite’. I repeat, not a hunter, or hunting type of a person really.. but I like shooting guns/ & video games.. so this is just the most fun for me. Buy it, you will love it too.Update: One year later. Still love this game. Am at level 60 now. Have most of the weapons. Just a few missions left to do. (you are right, some bear missions remain). They don’t bother me as much now that I have the .454 mag as I’m walking around in Balmont- but still a little freaky to come upon one ‘face to face’. I’m not sure if it’s just me but when I go back and forth between maps, I seem to lose some of my hunting stands and even some of the outposts turn green and show ‘unclaimed’ when I return. So yea, there are a few bugs here and there, haven’t had any animal freezes or glitches since the early days of the console release. I will agree with some of the comments, it is a little hard to figure out. At first. You will get quicker at the controls when you have a moose bearing down on you- or those crazy cow elk that like to stampede you. I always carry a tent in my backpack so I can put it down and save when I am ready to quit. Then next time I start the game, I’ll pop up in the tent and don’t have to travel all the way from an outpost. Plus you have your cache in a tent so you can change weapons, buy ammo, etc. And you can fast travel from tent to tent, or to outposts- very handy when you’re doing missions. It does limit the amount of weapons you can have with you, but well worth it to me. I still take a big rifle, small rifle and a handgun depending on what mission I’m on. In hind-sight I should’ve spent time at the shooting range in Hirschfelten when I first started on the bows, as it caused a lot of tracking various game with arrows/bolts in non-vital spots. But where is the fun in that. I can track with the best of them now. I still would like to ask the creators one small favor : Can you pleaaaase make it so I can un-click certain animals I’d prefer not to see? Ok, most likely I’m the only one that would use that feature. I would settle for a little less rain, then. Love this game – just doesn’t get old, in my opinion.

    Great Hunting Game

Bought this to have a nice relaxing alternative to the sports games I usually play. The graphics and atmosphere are very good. Very large open world and when you crawl around in the brush is near photo realistic. Just learning now but it will definitely get alot of my time.

    1) Two big open reserves to hunt 2) Beautiful game and graphics 3) Realistic and a good hunting …

Pros:1) Two big open reserves to hunt2) Beautiful game and graphics3) Realistic and a good hunting simulator4) High Replay Value with having a progression system5) Best hunting game to date and I really hope they make a second one as they have a really good base to build off ofCons:1) Occasional bugs (usually online) i.e I shot a deer and it just froze standing up lol.2) I don’t find this a con but some might as the game is very slow and methodical.3) The missions seem like an afterthought and are not that interesting4) The menu system is very outdated and a chore to navigate through5) No licensed firearms or bowsOverall I really enjoy this game and if you hunt in real life you will appreciate this game and it is a definite buy. If you are not a Hunter and just want to try something different I say the 40 dollar price tag is reasonable for this game to make the purchase.

Save Your Money… Do research before buying!

I purchased this game back when it was first released. It was actually fun back then even though there was still problems from day one. But as time progressed the developers have made this game the worst pile of garbage that was ever released to home gamers.Be expected for constant updates and patches to fix patches that end up broken because of other patches. It is ludicrous!!!! The developers rush to release new content ( actual “PAID” DLC such as new maps, weapons, and even new animals) just to make quick money. They release updates to correspond to the DLCS but do NOT test these updates prior to being released and we end up with a broken unplayable game for LONG periods of time until they decide to actually work on FIXES rather then new content. I don’t know HOW many times this game as been unplayable for long periods of time. And recently as I am writing this review. the game is NOT PLAYABLE again! IF you check their support pages you will see many complaints of the game not working or people actually losing weapons that they actually paid for with real money, or now at this point crashing back to dashboard or freezing every 2 or 3 minutes making it very frustrating. Maybe NOT everyone experiencing the same issues but a lot OF THEM ARE!! And it isn’t singled to one particular console,. I bought it for PS4 but you will see that XBOX gamers are ALSO experiencing the same issues. This game is originally a STEAM release. but it seems that we, as console gamers, are beta testing a game which WE PAID for!!Another note you should be aware of before purchasing is that when the game was FIRST released you were able to install and play it without the need for internet access IN fact the BOX itself says for one player and NOTHING on the box saying you need internet access. I played for a few months with out internet access and NOT one problem aside for the already features that were already broken but not completely killing the game. After about 6 -7 months they all of a sudden decided to REQUIRE internet access, you can NOT even load the game up without requiring to be LOGGED into their servers. Which is to me is completely wrong. It is like if I sell you a car and about 7 months later go to your house and change the engine so you will be forced need me to to make it run! That is NOT in the contract ..and of course with this game the developers have the nerve to literally change the agreement ONLY AFTER you already purchased it.. because of what is stated on the box! NOW, the box itself is actually considered false advertising! So if you don’t want the stress from a game going though its own developer hell then I would recommend some other hunting game that works!!!

    Game Does Not Autosave!!!

So far I can say the game has excellent graphics, it’s closest a video game will get to real life hunting. That being said it can get frustrating sometimes because you can spend 20+ minutes just tracking an animal, and even an hour sometimes. However I DISLIKE how the game seems to not autosave your progress! So if you get far in the game and complete side missions, and you turn it off then go back to play, all your progress was lost. From researching it seems to be a bug. This makes wanting to play very frustrating because each time you have to start from square one.

Most Realistic Hunting Game Yet. Patience Required.

Graphics are amazing. Animal AI is pretty good (tons better than most Hunting games). Playable maps are HUGE. I haven’t seen a good hunting game since Deerhunter 05. Hopefully they will add DLC’s for the consoles. The Medved Taiga DLC for PC looks awesome. I only experienced a few infrequent minor glitches (frozen or stuck animals) but not any saving problems like a few reviewers did. I would like to see game (like sheep or goat) up above the treeline. You climb all the way up to the snowline and there’s nothing up there except maybe a squirrel or rabbit, a few birds.Amount of fast travel locations seems limited for such huge maps but you can purchase tents(which serve as fast travel locations) and place them anywhere on the map.Not for everyone as it is not a shooting gallery but a hunting simulation. Could be better, especially with more content but all in all a great game.p.s. Don’t like the game scoring. Need to use B&C scoring (or at least have a way to keep track of weight and Trophy Score). Also a Trophy Room is needed. Still a great game though.UPDATE p.p.s. Just found out they don’t have legendaries (level 9) for all species . What? that is crazy. You can’t get a legendary whitetail? They need to fix this. Just shot a 543 lb. Black Bear (TR 21) and it was AWESOME.

Wonderful to play, as close to genuine hunting as a game can get.

I purchased this game and received it quickly on November 26, 2017. I’ve accumulated about 12 hours of gameplay so far and I absolutely love this game. I’ve bow hunted every year for the last 9 years and I’ve been looking for a game with as close to the genuine thing as possible. Cabela’s is no match against this game. The maps are HUGE and beautiful, they are full of everything you’d see and hear in the wild. Plenty of weapons, ammo and equipment to choose from. My game saves everytime, so no problems with that like I’ve read other people have had. When you play just make sure you have a couple hours, take your time, be quiet and you’ll be knocking down game every session. This game takes a lot of patience, it’s much more rewarding when you knock something down that way. I have No Regrets buying this game 🙂 The singing birds, rain against the leaves of the trees, the wind blowing the grass blades is all very soothing. It’s a wonderful game. Happy Hunting!

5 stars because I do love this game

5 stars because I do love this game, its actually taught me how to recognize animal calls and track. Took the skills I used and applied them. I was pretty stoked about it.Its very very hard. at least at first until you earn better equipment.Don’t fret if you cant find the atv at first. Its in the home base locations in the gun buy menu under garage.Like I said 5 stars cause I do love this game, but the missions are pretty basic and the game could have a lot more. never was a $60 game so take that with a grain of salt. Open world hunting. The maps are insanely huge. Larger than anything Ive ever seen. Larger maps than even in The Witcher 3. There’s actually another 25 square mile map in the game, a snow one in Siberia with brown bears and lynx and the like, but you have to go on market place and spend 7 bucks to download it. its a 1mb download so you know what that means. already in the game.
