It fills a void in my life!

When I realized there was an empty spot in my life left by the death of my husband and kids in a boating accident, I contemplated what could fill it. Drugs? Alcohol? A pet?Oddly enough, hours of pointless game play with strangers was just what I needed. Hearing some moronic 14 year old yelling obscenities at how poorly I play MW3 so reminded me of my son that I can’t get enough. I’ve found myself making dumb mistakes just so I get yelled at. Do I have a problem? Maybe I need some professional help. The starter kit does exactly what it says. It gets you online so you can be friended by obnoxious children with nothing better to do but build up experience on video games. Like that will be a good bullet point on a future resume! The headphones are very basic. I’d suggest getting some nice Turtle Beach ones. The little keypad makes trying to guess some old password you once picked for some WindowsLive account years ago easier but no less frustrating. In the end, using a new email address is much quicker. But all in all, this is a good purchase. It won’t bring back your dead family, but it does give you something to do with all the free time their deaths has given you.

    Great Value

I purchased this Xbox Live Starter Pack for my son. It comes with the 12 month Xbox Live membership, head set, chat pad and 400 Points. I paid $62 for the package. I’m glad I bought it. The best price I could find for the 12 month membership alone was $49. For another $13, I got the head set, chat pad and 400 points. This is a great deal. The chat pad works great and it can be used to enter text on any of the text dialog box screens as well as for texting. Much easier than using the virtual keyboard. At first I thought it wasn’t working. However, I realized you really have to push it hard into the controler until you hear a click. Then it worked flawleslly. It even lights up, so you can see the keys in the dark. The headset is the same one that came with our Xbox 360 but having an extra one when friends are over is an advantage. All in all, this is a great deal and I would highly recommend it!

    So much more convenient

I purchased this for a multitude of reasons, mostly for the keypad. I’m not sure what I was expecting, but it is very solid, just like the xbox360 controllers. When it’s plugged into the controller, it’s still easy to hold, doesn’t interfere with playing games and doesn’t wiggle around like cheaper off-brand accessories. It feels rock solid and like part of the original controller. It’s actually VERY convenient any time you have to type things in on the screen using the little on-screen keyboard which takes forever. This is less of a factor when playing actual video games, but with the improvements already made to Xbox live and with more surely on the way, this was an easy decision for me. The online services available incorporate so many additional services, I’d rather type in a search term when looking for a video, movie, music, etc. than use the cumbersome on-screen keyboard. For the little keyboard alone, this kit was worth buying. The 12 month membership was also a great deal when purchased in this fashion. Cheaper than month-to-month and Amazon even beat the year-subscription price offered by Microsoft. As for the headphones, I can’t really say they are anything special, nor are they terrible. Build quality is good, and the thing will last you forever. The cord tends to get in the way so I actually use a wireless set at home. Again, the headphones being included is just a bonus, even if they weren’t included this was a good purchase.

4 items, one package, one great price

when I set out looking to extend my xbox live membership, I didnt get very far before I happened upon this product.I’ll review in reverse, from least significant to most significant.1- 400 ms points, ok, not really a whole lot you can do with only 400 points, but theres some good things out there on the xbl market place, so this one gets a nod in favor.2- the chat pad, I cannot tell you enough how painful it can be trying to type out a message, or enter a prepaid code, via the onscreen gui.. 90% of the gamers I know who didnt have a chatpad would use the xbox website for code entries. this is a godsend.it also adds some real estate in terms of areas to hold the controller, which I admit.. at times, feels positively tiny in my paw-like hands, so even if you do not use the chat pad for much? this adds some much needed space to hold onto.3- the headset, I admit this is the one part of the product I worry about given its flimsy appearance, but if you’re someone who takes care of their toys, I foresee this to have a VERY long and useful life.4- the 12 month subscription card. possibly the most important item in the box.. 12 months of xbox live gold. I really dont think I can say anything that hasnt already been said.considerations- sold seperately? you’d pay close to a hundred bucks, maybe more, depending where you shop, here? $63.24 as of today’s price. a definite money savings here.conclusion- worth the purchase.

    Great Value!

The Xbox LIVE 12 Month Gold Starter Kit is a really great value, for $69 bucks you get a the XBox ChatPad, a headset microphone, a 12 month XBox Gold Live account, and 400 Microsoft Points; purchased alone, a 12 month gold account subscription and 400 MS points will set you back $65.The Chat Pad makes sending messages and entering info into the XBox a whole lot easier than the plinka, plinka, plinka, click method of the controller alone. However, the ChatPad does add weight, and changes the feel of the controller, making the Controller pad a little more awkward to use, and increasing fatigue during long gaming sessions. The headset is a flimsy wired unpowered monaural (one ear) headset mic, which plugs into the hand Controller. The headset is fine for in-game chat, but not sound output; you will want a serious headset if you want sound and chat in the same product. One thing I noticed, is when you connect the ChatPad to the controller and then plug in the headset the connection is sometimes unreliable. Also the cord often gets in the way and I am always yanking the headset pin out of the jack, or off of my head.Overall I would highly recommend this product.Pros:Great ValueUseful if heavy ChatPadMicrophone headset12 Month XBox Gold Live Account400 Microsoft PointsCons:Cheap Monaural headset, with annoyingly short cable, not always reliable connecting through the ChatPad.ChatPad ads extra weight to the controller making it awkward and increasing fatigue over prolonged use.

Great deal/package with a few taints.

After getting sick of typing out long messages on my TV with the controller or having to keep my laptop besides me to send messages. I finally took the bait and decided to buy the chatpad. My membership was about to expire as well so I decided to get this package since it came with both. I ordered this on the weekend. It was shipped out the next day and I got it the day after which was pretty fast. As you probably already know, you get a mic, 400 M$ points, a year’s worth of Xbox Live and the chatpad. The mic is just your standard no frills Xbox headset. The codes are as described.I believe the main reason for getting this package is the chatpad. Does it work well? Yes, it works VERY well and once you start using it, you will wonder how you ever typed messages without it. However, that is IF you can get it to work initially. It can be quite tricky installing it. Simply plugging it in doesn’t do the trick. Due to the extra connectors not really fitting in, you will have to push it extra hard until you hear a second pop or sorts. Once it’s in though, it works very well. The keyboard is a 5 row qwerty layout with the number row up top and a dedicated Messenger button for you Messenger fans out there. If you’re used to a computer layout, you might be a bit thrown off at first by the placement of the “backspace” key but you get used to it over time. The space bar is pretty big, no problems there. The “enter” key is a bit small though but not really much of an issue. On the bottom far right and left of the keyboard are colored “Alt” keys of sorts that allow you to input special characters like “%, $, @” etc.A complaint I have heard often is that it adds a bit of bulk to the controller. Personally, I don’t really feel the extra weight. I have slightly big hands so that may be why. If you do feel weight though, you can simply unplug it when it’s not in use. Another complaint I’ve heard is that it makes the controller lose it’s sleekness. Hey, I say functionality over style.Overall, I am happy with my purchase. One thing I do hope is that this thing is compatible with the controller of the next Xbox that comes out but that seems to be wishful thinking, eh?

Great value, but the headset is likely to break

This bundle is a great value if you just got your Xbox and want to play games online, watch netflix, hulu+, etc. They really shouldn’t charge for this, especially for Netflix, Hulu, etc. since you pay extra for those and they have their own servers so it costs Microsoft nothing to provide these services. However, it’s only about $5 a month when you buy it annually, so it’s not the end of the world. It’s twice as much if you pay by the month.I have the chatpad on my controller and find myself using it often enough that I never take it off – it’s not overly heavy so I hardly notice it’s there. It great for search for movies in Netflix, typing in usernames/passwords in games (EA Sports makes you sign in separately from Xbox Live), and sending messages to friends when your headset breaks and they wonder why you’re not talking… See below…The headset broke after a few weeks of use. Its the same cheap headset that came with the console, and that one broke as well. The mic stopped working on both, in case you were wondering. I’ve learned that if you play games with friends online, then you should invest is a Turtle Beach headset, or something like that. I just got one in the mail yesterday, but haven’t been able to try it out yet. Also, I let Amazon know that my headset broke, and the issued a $20 credit to my account so I could buy a new one.. I applied those funds to a the TB DLX1’s for $75.Four stars for the bundle, one less because of the headsetFive stars for Amazon giving me a refund on the headset

    for the price, why not

Isnt the title enough? With all the things included in the pack, you get a sweet deal. The one thing I really like though is the chatpad. Normally like 20 bucks, included in the deal. I dont need a chatpad very often, but jeez, the soft keyboard sucks when using a controller. I was sending text messages to friends just because it was so easy. Doesnt add much weight to your controller and it lights up for night use. I wish there was some kind of setting for that though, so I didnt have to punch blindly for the first keystroke.Plus, you can normally get this on sale for lower than the price of a year of XBL gold. Just make sure you get it ahead of time, cause the price seems to jump around on amazon.Just a warning though, the headset that comes with it works with the chatpad, not the controller. So you have to use the chatpad to use the headset. You cant use the old style headset with the chatpad.

Good value, but maybe just opt for a membership and headset next time

Great value, as it’s quite a bit less money than buying all the items separately. The headset is a standard entry-level type headset. I’m not a serious gamer so I dont really see myself spending upwards of $80 for a fancy-pants one (or even $30 for a mid-range one). As long as I can hear people and they can hear me I’m happy (so far so good!).The chatpad is next to useless. I figured I would get a lot of use out of this little doodad but it makes it near impossible to use the controller other than for typing since it blocks where part of your palms go on the controller (at least the way I hold it). Hooking it up is simple enough, but rather than just plugging into the headset jack it also has posts that snap into the screw holes on the bottom of the controller. It’s not hard to remove/install but I can see this constant pushing down and pulling back motion will almost certainly break the headset jack sooner or later. I’d rather not have to buy another $50 controller if I can avoid it. That being said, since I dont have it plugged in I rarely find myself digging the chatpad out and installing it to type something I want to find on Netflix or wherever. It’s a great idea (I wish Wii would take a hint and have one for the original Wiimotes) but just doesnt work terribly well in practice. The backlight is a nice touch though, and it does help using it if you’re playing in the dark. The Gold membership….there’s not much to say there. I honestly only got an XBox to play games with a friend of mine online while I was away for work for a few months. If I had known that you have to pay for nearly EVERYTHING that XBox uses I probably would have passed. The equipment and games are expensive enough, and then to charge for online content is just a bit over the top. So far I’ve been able to get away with just the Gold membership but Microsoft really makes you feel like you’re missing out if you dont buy expansions for your games or cool promo clothes for your profile avatar (seriously, you want me to PAY to have my avatar wear a hat with YOUR logo on it???).Great value overall, but unless you’re doing some serious texting or in-game chatting I’d probably skip the chatpad and just buy the two other times separately

2/3 of the package is 5 stars, the other part is 3 stars 🙂

Chatpad: 5 stars. Back-lighted, allows me to search for movies, youtube videos, and set up recordings on media center extender very easily (works for entering various passwords too). I can still game with the controller with it on without issue (Battlefield 3) and I would argue it adds a nice weight to the controller. Its a little scary snapping it in place with so much force (plastic on plastic) so be careful, but once it is in hopefully you dont have to change it too often. Still has the 2.5mm headset port available on the bottom.12 mo Xbox live card: Well it came as described, and the overall value was worth it in this package.Headset: The worst of the bunch, but if you want to try out VOIP capabilities for the xbox without investing in a fancier wireless headset, this works just fine. It has a mute/unmute button which is useful (for the mic audio only). You can also swivel the mic to and from your face. Speaker quality is passable. The shirt clip is clumsy and takes a while for me to get on every time. I plug it into the chatpad. Another option would be to use a standard headset from a cell phone and plug it into the jack with a 2.5-3.5mm converter, but I doubt the mute capability would work (unless it was an in-line mute function). The whole package was $49.99 and was well worth the extra $14 above the 12 month Xbox live gold card alone. As a bonus it also came with a 400 Xbox live point card.
